using an infered temp sender my Cooper S after a 20km run, and 5 min ideling sits at a very high 68 deg C  but the temp sender reads a bit high. apparently there is a bloke that advertises in aust classic car magazine makes one that is correct for a mini! as most read either cooler or hotter

that's about where mine sits when idling with my temperature reading multimeter on the dash and the probe taped to the top radiator hose (inlet to the engine, so has been cooled by the radiator), when driving around the temperature drops to 55 ish

I bought another probe this morning, I'll put it on the bottom rad hose to see the difference after the water has been throught the motor

Oh hell, just got home with a very hot "Snail" again and its 44deg , my poor clubman didnt boil and I feel horrible, I cant believe they made me work, I was unloading containers and it was like being in an oven, the car is going to need some TLC after this. :(

My brother and I gave "Snail" a check, I will need to change the oil after getting so hot its changed colour and doesnt smell the best, one of my spare 998,s has the bracket for a screw-on filter I,ll swap the canister filter out on my 1100 as soon as possible. The other thing we found was an exhaust leak, now I had been aware of a small leak but obviously the clamp behind the motor had vibrated loose. Now having the hot exhaust gases coming out there seems to have had quite an effect on the car in hot weather, it put extra heat in to the SU which apparently leaned out the engine making it run hotter, the heat from the hotter engine and the exhaust gases plus a very high ambient temperature ( over 40deg ) was too much for the cars cooling system. We put Loctite Muffler Putty around the clamp , I slightly richened the mixture and brought the idle up to about 900rpm. "Snail" is running fine and a lot quieter now, but will definitely need a full service ASAP , it just got too hot to to do it any good.

sounds like you're getting it under control - with regular maintenance, a mini's cooling system is well up to the job

a leaky exhaust also causes turbulence in the exhaust, basically making a blockage in it, the engine can't push the exhaust out so it retains more heat in the motor, and it robs power, meaning the engine has to work harder to make the same power (to travel at speed)
