The source for what is in Penrite is from Penrites own literature and if you know what the ratings numbers on the bottles mean (SF,IAF ETC) which they dont make easy to find but you can google the standards and find out

As for Castrol they advertised heavily when they changed the oil back in the early 80s and whch led to the engine reconditioners of Australia putting out a bulletin about it and telling peopl that they would not warrant engines that were run in or use it

Its what happens when you have been around longer than 5 minutes and have worked and been friends with people from the oil companies.

If you atill don't believe it ring Penrite and sak them if they now have friction modifiers in there oil, its fine for most cars but not for minis or any car with a gearboc in the sump

I use KMX.

I used to run HPR30 im my Morris for about 8 years. It always slightly leaked oil from the crank seal and the driveshaft seals. It also had mayo in the rocker cover for most of winter.

When I switched to KMX the car suddenly stopped leaking oil past the seals. The mayo in the rocker cover has reduced.

It is cheap oil, it is good oil and you are not paying through the nose for an advertising campaign.

Why would you run anything else? 8)

I got 2 more 6L cans of KMX today, $18 or so each. KMart had Castrol Edge Sport 25W/50 on runout special, $35 for 5L.
That's why I use KMX... it does the same job at way less than 1/2 the price. 8)
I can afford to change it every 1500 miles... :D

<edit> I said earlier that KMX is an SF- I was wrong, it's SG.

Mine's "only" an 1152, but I switched from Penrite HPR30 to Castrol Edge to KMX a few years ago and see much more consistent oil pressure on the KMX. My engine has always burnt a little more oil than it should, but it burns less KMX than it did HPR30.

I used to swear by Penrite in the '90s, in a worn engine HPR50 was the beez kneez.. but as Feral says they modified it (it's now API SM I think) a few years ago and not as good.

In a Mini you want nothing later than API SG, period.

Where can I buy the KMX oil in inner west sydney? I'm sick and tired of this bullshit, I almost wanna run home brand cooking oil. I did a change with HPR40 ($35/5 litres) and I think its drinking even more than el cheapo 20w50 at $25 for 5 litres. Could be due to my fixed pcv system tho... maybe I should put a restricter in there.

Find a Kmart, they'll have it, usually around $20 for 6L.

I haven't tried it yet, but i have just recently got some Elf oil, i think its name super sporti or something like that. It's a 25w-60 mineral oil, i think its an SG. I was chatting with our oil supplier salesman and he was telling me a bit about it. It has zinc and all those other things that the old cars like, and he mentioned it didnt have the friction modifier additives Feralsprint is talking about.

This guy runs it in his Dodge Charger race car and he reakons you can race on it all day and it still has really good body. Doesn't break down quickly etc. His only comment was in the mini being so thick it might affect the first couple of gearchanges but then it will be excellent.

I think he said a bottle of 4ltrs normally sells for $30 but i get it for $18. So its worth a try i reakon.
