i havnt done a search because im lazy but i dont think this has been asked before... under the current laws in victoria p platers arent allowed to drive high powered or forced ind vehicles... so they have to get by wrapping there excels around polls... my question is.. me being a red p plater.. could i supercharge or turbo the mini and get an exemption for some kind of bull sh*t reason? has anyone done this and got away with it.. if not il make do with the less power because i dont want to go to extremes to achieve it... anyone have an ideat

there are plenty of reasons you can use, the ol' Its the only car available to me at the time, its an awsome mini-i dont need to justify!
usually with the exemptions they'll let you drive via power2weight (correct me if im wrong!) where if its a heavy car with a turbo then there arent any problems (my little cuz just got his reds and wrote into the RTA saying the only car they have is a 1.8L turbo audi, got the reply a week later, no worries.)

but with a turbo or charger, it aint worth it.... you make the car as fast as you want N/A, and would probably work out for the best in the long run...

id be careful insurance will be void if your not allowed to drive forced induction,and you have a accident.

If you are serious about your racing career you need to forget about fancy road cars as they are a distraction from your goal.
You need to focus your time and cash on whatever you are racing this year as your number 1 priority.

Keep the BMW as it is a good car for relaxing trips to the interstate circuits, forget anything else.

I agree - the BMW will do fine. James Hunt used to drive around in a Morris 1000 traveller.

my son goes for his P's next month, my understanding is that ALL petrol engine turbos are a no no for P platers without speical permission but that special permission is pretty much a rubber stamp job anyway

Its true. My brother had a stock VL commodore turbo, with 140kw according to the dyno. Mr Plod booked him for driving a turbo car under the new laws, yet hes allowed to drive my v6 stock magna with 140kw (that incidently has better take off than his VL) with less weight in the magna than the VL. If I was a p plater I wouldn't bother turbo'ing as the last thing you want is to lose your license or have your mini impounded.

The P plate rules are stupid but you only have to obey them for a little while and then you can forget all about them (provided you make it of your P plates!)
In NSW all V8 or Turbo powered cars are on the banned list for P plate drivers no matter how big or small the engine is.

I did my P plates in a Morris 1100S and never thought of getting a more powerful car till later on. You have a lot of driving ahead of you so start small and build up, you have plenty of time for bigger engined cars provided you live past your P plates.

my brothers friend also has the VLturbo and had to take the turbo off it. (brought it before the rules came in but didnt get his license till after).

rules are no turbo's, no v8's, no performance modifications (exhaust, porting etc) suspension and brakes you can do and you can do any visual mod. anything that changes the engines power output is a no.

obviously in a mini there is a fair bit that cops wont know about, and any cop that doe know about mini's is probably going to let you off.

my car hits 98db exhaust and the cops have pulled me over for it and let me go again just cause they loved the car.

so extractors, headwork, carby are things you can probably get away with, but a turbo is a definate no. ( you may be able to get an exemption but i'd just wait till your off your p's then go to town on it, or make sure you can before you start getting parts for it)

Does that mean that in NSW you can't drive a Rover P5B on P plates?

Interestingly, when I got my P's, my dad's insurance company wouldn't give insurance to me for his Land Rover because it was 'turbo'. After a few more phones calls, speaking to people higher up the ladder it was ok'd. I think the V8 Land Rover was OK to them, but for some reason "turbo" made them funny about it.

Yep. You can't drive a high powered Simca Vedette either.

Vic previously had power to weight ratio calculation which made way more sense to me, you could have say a 253 in a Torana but not a 350, so a turbo a sereis would be ok but perhaps not a n/a starlet motor (if the power was higher)
