I think that car might be a 1965 car, I would be interested in knowing the car number tho if someone could PM to me, keen to know whether it is earlier or later than mine.

There is another member on Ausmini who owns a factory black MK1 S too.

I'll leave it to him to post more info.

I may know that car already, in Sydney? If so, have spoken with the owner. It is a later car than mine. Thanks for the info.

Don't think that it is an original ID plate. This is a genuine one from a 64 Cooper

Image

If you take note, the stamping has been done from the viewing side whereas all other plates have been stamped from the obverse side.

I would be very carefull... I have been collecting photos of BMC ID plates and they were all stamped from the front for a long while before they changed to reverse stamping.
They changed some time in the early 60s.

I had a good look at that car last year at Minis At The Mill - I can't remember the number, but it's around 50... somewhere, sorry!

I had a black 850 a couple of years ago and I sold it on Ebay. A guy in the US bought it and we shipped it to him. It was a genuine Black 850. Not many of them made either.

Hi Tombo, thanks for posting the picture of your plate! :D

It's off an early 997, I have also seen the plate of car number 588, two before yours, and it is stamped this way too, so no worries there! :P

I think the first 1200 or so cars were like this, 1188 certainly is as well!

Factory black is unusual, but quite possible, the early cars seemed to have a much wider variety of colurs.

I think Watto's article on 997 / 998's has a picture of a plate like this in the mag? Possibly the Peter Manton car? 666 ?

With your permission, I would like to add your numbers to the register. :P

Do you still have the car, or just the plate?

I know his car is early. I remember Gary telling me about some oddities with the carpet or something. I can't remember exactly what but something to do with cross-over parts maybe. Should really bust out TME and have a read.

I'll have to get a photo of a plate I have here , it's from a black cooper (not sure 997 or 998) speedway car that was being held together by it's roll cage after spending 20 years under trees ...
