Hi,

I recently purchased a mini shell off ebay for restoration and I'm pretty happy with my purchase, but I'm still not 100% sure what the exact shell model is.

I have the official BMC plate that came with the Mini,and it looks like this.
Image

The Type says: YMA2S1

From what I can gather based on that type it is:
Y = Australian
M = Morris
A = 848cc
2S = 2 Door Sedan
1 = Version 1 (or Mk1?)

Not really sure what all the other numbers mean though.

My conclusion is its a Morris Mini Mk1 ? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Can anyone shed some light on the year/name of this particular shell.

If it helps, the hole in the floor for the gear shifter is more towards the front of the car, as opposed to being next to the drivers seat. The front has wind up windows, and the back has the clipped ones that push outwards slightly.

Many thanks!

Cheers,
Ben

yes it is a Morris 850 (first version of the mini released here , 850 engine , sliding windows and wide number plate recess in the bootlid) and would have been built mid to late 1962 . I'll add it to the 850 register if you like (and update the list with the others I've been told of recently but haven't got to yet :oops: ) tomorrow ?

@sports850 yep, its the one from tweed heads.

The windows aren't sliding, they are wind-up ones.

Any ideas what the official name of this model is?

is this particular shell rare/more unique than others? Or is it much of a muchness?

Not particularly rare in itself but original 850's are becoming very desirable at the moment so if you have access to enough bits to make it original (or look original with a bigger motor) I'd go that way .

No doubt I'll be here more frequently from now on with questions regarding the restore :)

oh, one more question. I'm looking at getting a mini restoration manual, I have seen a few out there, but this one looks the best so far:

http://www.pitstop.net.au/view/products ... y/plu/1076

Does anyone else have any recommendations?

That is a workshop manual not a restoration manual.

Best restoration one IMO is Mini Restoration Manual by Lindsay Porter
