know a mate that has one at the back of the block (clutch end) with his water temp sender poking out of it... is it a suitable place to have the sender?

Head or the Block? - there is a bolt or a tap located in the region

It's actually the drain hole for the block. Probably the hottest part of the engine and slowest circulation spot so not a bad spot to have one I suppose. Open to others opinions.

Could have your cup of rice and have 2 temp guages... one sender at thermostat at the front and one at the end of the motor.

It's right at bottom of block, not where you want to watch for maximum temps. Heat rises...
I'd put it in the thermostat housing, or better still get another head like a 12G202... 8)

Early cars 850, Morris Minor etc have a tap/cock there that you could actually drain water out of.
Later cars just have a hex plug, and if you remove it after 30 years you are lucky to get anything but rust out.
To clear it you can try a twist drill in there twiddled with your fingers, it often works but not always.

Like the Doc says the early cars had a drain tap there.
In England during winter the water would freeze in the engine and damage it. The best anti-freeze is to have no water in the motor! So they would drain the water via the tap on the block and the tap on the bottom of the radiator.
It was actually the introduction of heaters that lead to the increased use of anti-freeze as a lot of heaters could not be drained easily so the solution was to use anti-freeze and not drain the motor.

I have tried this, in addition to usual temp sender in the head. It didn't add any value, registered a temp that was a higher than the temp in the head. At the end of Noosa Hillclimb run, this temp was showing 100*C + wherein the head gauge was 85 - 90*C.

As mentioned it is not the ideal spot, there is little or no flow and suspect the temp registered was more about the temp of the block rather than the water, if that makes sense.

I was hoping to use this second sender as a backup should water level drop and head sender not read. Given it's reading after the Hillclimb, not sure what temp to be worried about.

well there you go.... I did a little hunting for a sender that'd fit in there just last week. One didn't turn up, and other things became more important so I ditched the idea - maybe I won't bother at all now

I was curious to see what temp it'd run there.

How about modifying a welsh plug (brazing on a nut) to fit one elsewhere?

I bought a thermostat housing with a tapped hole for an extra sensor if what you want to do is run two probes to give a dual readout.
