I have a single speed motor that operates at about half the speed of most others. When first turned on barely moves but eventually gets going. worse than the vacuum ones on the 55 Chev i had

Is it a round body type or the square body type

I was looking at the wiring in my 77 Clubby van (rolling shell) and it only has 3 wires in the multi-pin plug. Did they only get a single speed motor then? I thought all late Clubbies got 2 speed wipers... :?

Quite possibly just what John says but another possibility is that all the grease has gone dry and hard hence the slow start and gets faster as it warms. This was exactly the same problem I had with the cooper but after stripping the wiper motor down and giving it a good clean and new grease, it runs like a new one. (It is single speed, non parker variety)

The mighty 1970 MiniMatic (with 3x original HP) now has working 2 speed wipers with autopark. :D
Once the wiring was sussed out, all it took was 1 extra wire from motor to MGB switch.

Doc - just so I fully understand your comment about 1 extra wire, is the wiring diagram on the previous page correct (i.e. including the extra wire)?

Yes, the extra wire is the one going to terminal 8 on the switch.
On a round 1 speed motor, the corresponding motor spade lug is missing.

<EDIT> I spoke too soon  , it all worked fine on the bench (both motors I built). Then I put motor in the car and it's running fine with the old switch, but when I hooked the new switch up it blows the 35A fuse... with the wiper switch in the OFF position.
Why? Dunno yet, stay tuned...
The motor is still OK, it's back on the old 1 speed switch.

I'd run with what 64cooper says. The old single speed Lucas wipers respond well to a clean and fresh lube.

Regards
Al

OK problem solved... it's now running with 2 speeds, in car and all good.
I didn't follow my own advice, I had the BLK (ground) wire on pin 6, not pin 4... :?
The diagram on previous page is CORRECT. :D

When rebuilding the wiper motor and you replace the plate and the grease.
How much grease should you put in and where exactly (when i pulled mine apart it had grease all over the metal plate but i cant see and point to this, except brake the electrical conection) is it ok to place grease only where the cog connects the threaded rod bit from the motor??

Thanks brenton

These motors often get water in them somehow, coming down the cable.
John Smidt told me to pack the whole top part with grease after the gear, conrod and cable is in. I used Castrol HMP.
If a little gets under the gear and onto the slip ring, that doesn't matter.
Anything to stop the slip ring (park plate) rusting away... they are only thin mild steel.

One more thing- if the cutout on the outside of the plate is higher than the nylon lug (on the gear) when assembled, sand a slight chamfer on the 2 edges of plate. Best done BEFORE you bend the 4 tabs over.
