 Post subject: Looseness in driveshafts

Hi guys,
I'm seeking an opinion. '79 Clubman GT with pot joints, there seems to be quite a bit of slack between the wheel and diff input/potjoint housing. I guess there is a little bit of wear in the CV's, splines and potjoint. It is not clacking on turns so my question is should I be concerned about it?

The shaft will move freely in the potjoint in and out to allow for suspension movement and the shaft should be locked into the CV with circlips. Maybe check the circlips?

Though if it's not causing you any dramas i wouldn't be pulling it apart, unless you don't know when they were last replaced/checked.

Depends how much, if the axial movement is more than a couple of millimetres check it out.

In normal operation a cv joint gets grooves worn into it by the balls, if the play is only a few degrees and there is no clicking don't worry. Unless of course you have a big HP engine, i saw a moke smash both inner cups at the same time at Hay once.

If they don't chatter on full lock the CVs are still OK, IMO.
They chatter when they get dry, a good grease and reboot often fixes this.

But, beware lots of backlash between the pot joints, this usually means the diff pin and spider gears are past their use-by date. If they go BANG it gets expensive.

Thanks Kev,
The car is on 12" wheels and my experience is with 10's, so it probably seems worse to me than it is. The car has only done 94K, so it shouldn't be badly worn. There doesn't seem to be much losseness in the diff.
