For my trailer project http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48802 I am doing away with the standard mini subframe and replacing it with a solid axle and leaf springs. I will be marching down a pair of mini trailing arms making them into stub axles which will be slid into a mild steel pipe. What I'm trying to figure out is how do I attach them to the pipe is it possible to weld cast iron and mild steel? or should I put a couple of bolts through the stubs and pipe or what
Any ideas or sudjestions will be appreciated.

The Mini has steel stub axles pressed into the trailing arm....

The inner bearing sits up against the trailing arm and the oil seal is sits on the trailing arm.

The best and safest option would be to get a trailer axle made to measure.

Kenno,,, i believe the stub axles are steel,,, press them in & weld & also add a couple of plug welds... easy-peasy

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

You just need to make the pipe the right size for the oil seal to sit on and you need a flat surface for the bearing to sit up against.

Can the stub axle be pressed out and if so from which side?

either side, tho i would press them from the bearing side in. rather than pressing old ones out just buy 2 new ones off John, he should have heaps of them.

can't you buy trailer axles ready made that fit a mini wheel - ever seen a small boat trailer?

When you could buy these they had Holden hubs and bearings, with the flanges drilled for 4 x 4" PCD studs.
Hard to buy Mini steel wheels now, most small trailers run those crappy 9" crossply tyred mags.. with integral hubs.

They will press out both ways but you need to take the circlip if the back of the axle before pushing it from behind. To remove the circlip you need to push the axle in a bit and then remove the circlip and than you can push it out.

Those hubs are still available. Alko part number 30160101.

Yes, in whatever width you want. Not as cheap as recycling mini parts.
I bought a complete axle with hubs'n'bearings & run moke rims on my trailer:




It's got some plastic hubcaps on it at the moment, but thinking of putting some 10" jelly bean mags on & trimming back the mudguards...

What tyres are you running on that trailer? Are they proper high pressure trailer tyres?

I actually went out and got 2 brand new (4 years ago) 13" radial tires.
Have actually had it loaded with so much sand that the tires rubbed on the guards, I'd guess about 700kg on top of the 160kg tare.
