To all ausmini members,

In the next 24-48 hours ausmini will be changing servers.

Our current hosts have moved all their US servers to Australia, but unfortunatly do not provide the kind of hosting plan ausmini needs due to a large amount of bandwidth used.

The new server will also be located in Australia, so the great speeds and reliability (ignoring reaching the bandwidth limit last month, being the reason why we are moving) we have been experiencing for the last few months should stay.

During this swapping period I will be locking the forum down, and will only open the forum back up on the new server.

Two things will take time during this swap. The first is replicating the current server on the new server. The second, which may take between 24-48 hours is DNS (domain name system) propagation throughout the internet. This is what links a domain name (www.ausmini.com in our case) to an IP address (the address for the server).

While waiting for DNS to propagate, you may like to restart your modems/routers just in case they are holding any DNS tables.

Hopefully the move goes smoothly. Fingers crossed!!!

Scott, this time is dictated by the SOA record on the ausmini.com zone (or can be set per record within the zone). If you drop this to e.g. 3600 secs (one hour) a day or two before you make the change, then that is the maximum time it will take for the new record to propagate -- DNS servers and caching resolvers will not cache the record for longer than that.

We use this to great effect for load balancing and failover -- some of our DNS records have 1 second TTLs, which mean they're _never_ cached and they propagate immediately after we change them.

If you can edit the zone to change the A-record for www.ausmini.com, you can set the TTL on that record too (and probably for every other record in the zone, or the default in the SOA).

How do you normally edit records? Does your provider give you a web interface to manage the zone? If that's the case, then you might be restricted by what it permits.. but even then you should be able to ask the DNS provider to make the change for you.

It's your domain, you've got full control ;)

[edit] Your SOA record currently nominates [email protected] as the manager of the zone -- you're supposed to be able reach the zone operator at that address, but unfortunately not everyone obeys the rules...

I cant change it through there.
