Right, went to sort the brakes out today and noticed that when the wheel was off the ground and rotated i heard a 'ball bearing falling' type sound originating from the diff.....

Guessing that is a F#$ked diff...... Anyone else confirm or say other, also diff out = engine out??

If you have pot inner cv's could be that they are dry and are rattling around. easy to check . pull the boot away from the pot joint and take a peek.

my bet would be the double row bearing on the mainshaft,,, very common to have exactly that happen with them & sound exactly like what you have described

diff bearings however rarely get the loads or workout that the mainshaft bearing does & are often like new after years of use

so,,, my bet is double row bearing

huh.... Sorry to sound vague.... Double row bearing on main shaft?!?! he noise is when 1 wheel is on the deck and other is off ground being rotated by hand!

Yeah,,, so when one wheels is stationary, that means you`re turning the whole crown wheels assy, which in turn , is attached to the main shaft via the pinion gear,,, hence why i said my bet is the bouble row bearings,,, & in my experiences i don`t believe i`ve see as many diff bearing cages cracked (rare) as compared to the umpteen number of double row bearing cages that are rooted,,,

if both wheels were in the air then you could find that the other wheel will turn the other direction, that will be the diff pinion gears spinning ( no bearings in that lot) & the crown wheel would be stationary

I can re build gearboxes fine. I even made a special tool for dealing with the double row bearing. Ask super mini.

I agree.
This problem started when RHP went cheap and started using plastic cages. Dirty old Mini oil is acidic, it and the heat rots the cages and they fall to bits. Then the balls all lay in the bottom so 1/3 of the bearing has no balls...
Cure? change the oilz, often.

well,,, if i`m right & it is the double row, then i`d get it fixed asap

But in saying that,,, the engine that`s currently in my roady (sh!tty little 2nd hand 998 that was given to me) has been in there for well over 5 years now (since the 1510 came out) & it had the same problem back before when it was fitted, i can`t count how many trips it`s done to Byron Bay & back, let alone the 20K plus miles i do each year running around town with the dam thing

I totally expected it to give trouble well before a year, let alone now 5 years & the dam thing still actually goes,,, the small bore twinkly will go into it next week so i really couldn`t give a rats arse about it now,,, it`s done it`s job,,, & done it admirably

so,,, to answer the question,,, it sounds like it`s already buggered, a few more weeks of easy driving probably won`t do it much more harm than it already has,,, but yeah get it done when you can hey?> i worry about other peoples cars more than my own

Lets face it,,, if you didn`t check your brakes (or whatever it was you were checking) then you wouldn`t have known about it anyways hey? & obviously you would have kept driving it without a worry hey?



i`m not saying don`t fix it tho,,, sure, definately get it fixed,,, but just think---> how long has it been buggered for????

yeah & you`ve been driving on it without an issue right??? ,,,so don`t be too phased about it,,, but yeah,,, you know it`s there now so you gotta do it

It's short term usable until the brg completely colapses, smashes the rest of the gearbox and while this is happening the metal goes thru the eng and fixes that for you
