Webers are prone to spitting fuel. They are also likely to spit flame if the engine is not running correctly. A sports air filter soaked with fuel and a flame from the carb is a bad combination. I know a few people who have fitted webers and ended up losing their car in a fire (not Minis) back in the 70's. Weber engines need to be kept well tuned.

I thought I had fixed mine (see post a couple of weeks ago). It turned out that it was still leaking after all. I also put a new gasket the same as smiling Simon and that seems to have fixed it. Haven't taken it for a decent run yet. Fingers crossed.

I've had a few fires - all electrical, but I've never had any fuel leaks with a weber.

i think it might have been the soft mount had settled a bit. I've tightened it up and hopefully that will do it. will see how it goes tomorrow

Check that its not leaking from the starter jets under the cover on the manifold side between the 2 mounting faces. Webers don't like being mounted at more than 5 deg from horizontal (according to the weber w'shop/installation book). Many Mini Weber manifolds mount the weber at more like 15 deg from horizontal to get it to fit without hitting bulkhead. Can cause leaks from starter jet area.
Had the same problem leaks and never did stop it so took weber off before the fire started. Measured mounting angle and found it was about 15 deg and then checked books.
