Hi all,
As I've been trying to sell the '70 cooper S, I had a guy ask if I had a BHMT certificate for it. I wasn't even sure if these were issued for cars in Australia. Is there a place where I can read about what paperwork normally accompanied an S in Oz, and also, is there a way to research my car's numbers with BLMC in Australia, etc.? Or a local government agency where I could do the same?

Lastly, this guy suggested contacting Matt Read in Brisbane, to get a letter stating that I had an original, genuine cooper S. Any ideas how to contact him?

Thanks all,
bmc

Heritage certificates are for English built built cars only....Mad Matt the Mini Man Read posts on here regularly, where does he get the time!!!

However, I would say that it would be a brave man to confirm your Cooper S was genuine from another country sight unseen and just by the documentation.

Your documentation might be genuine along with matching vehicle stampings and numbers, but it could still be a fake (people do that sort of things believe it or not!).

Post up the numbers here (without the last three digits of the engine number and people will be able to comment)

When Leyland Aust closed up shop here, stopped making Minis and went home to Mother England, they pretty much trashed and burned all the records of Australian Mini production.
However, enthusiasts here on ausmini forum have compiled some production info on our Cooper S, if you post the details of your car we can probably give you a pretty good idea of when it was built or first registered.

I think he has been posting and asking for info for a while now Kev.

It looks like he has convinced himself what he has, but the buyer won't take his word without paperwork.

Unless the car has a perfect ownership and registration record and you know the people personally from day dot, then unfortunately there is no way to generate paper "proof" of the identity of an Australian Cooper S (or any other BMC product for that matter).

Sorry to say bmac, but if the guy won't buy without the paper, then you best look for another buyer.

Send him a PM - he's TheMiniMan on Ausmini. I don't know how he can help though, he can't give you any more certification of your car than you already have.. and unless he can actually inspect the car he's got as much idea what you've got as anyone else who can see the photo's.

bmacpiper,,, as the others have said, there is no such paper work avaliable to say that any Aust mini is certified genuine... & as for me being able to certify it myself, well i`m affraid i won`t be able to do anything like that, even if the car is in front of me, it`s a matter of eye-balling all the fiddly details & chasing it`s history back to when it was first purchased

& if the car is over in WA, well that`s on the other side of the country... sorry
cheers
Matt

A good chuckle! Yes, WA in the US...

No worries, as someone has already said, I've been talking with you all for a long time about this car now, and am really convinced (99% at least) that it's genuine. Too many things that are just near impossible to fake.

It's looking like the car won't sell before the ebay listing ends anyway, and so I guess perhaps I'm meant to have the matched set of Oz cooper S's. If it stays with me, it will go back to its original monotone tamarisk green, just because everyone has bonnet stripes and a white roof, right? :) I don't WANT to get rid of it, it's just that darn cashflow thing...

Thanks as always, everyone.

If you know what state the car used to be registered in in Australia you can apply to the RTA (Roads and traffic association) for a copy of a registration paper. There records ,may not go back as early as 1970/1 but may go back to the early 80's or mid 70's, this will help explain the originalality of it, because it will mention the body number and the engine no, colour etc
You apply through the "freedom of information Act"
Still no guarentee but may help

I did this with my mini Gt and they could only find back to 1983ish, but the numbers were the same as to what i had so.....
