Back then the Studebaker Larks, Dodge Phoenixes and Vals would clear out in front for a few laps, it looked a great race until their drum brakes all went tata.

Hee....hee..he...but they were good for Minis to use to slow down  :D

How about this then....in late 1966 front disc brakes became optional on V8 models also :!: :D

If you want to see what a race car without a computer looks like take a peek at Nascar.
You don't need a computer to go fast.

Get a copy of Motor Sports Legends magazine Volume #1 Issue #3 (google it and you will find it and they will send you a copy $6.95 plus postage) It has a four page write up on The Giant Killers Bathurst '66 and why they won. It was wtiten by Watto from The Mini Experience Magazine. Also if you PM Watto on here he will tell you which edition of TME has info in it. I would look but mine are under lock and key after I saw how much a set of TME went for recently. Also, the DVD set called The Great Race, Disc 1 (available seperately and watto may sell these too) is the footage of Bathurst from 63 to 66 with commentary. Hope this helps.

Thanks Flute.

I'm glad someone remembered me for this thread.

Yes, best resource you will find is Issue 4 of The Mini Experience.

Cooper S did take the first 9 places outright.

VC Valiants did finish 10th and 11th outright, but 6 and 8 laps behind the winner, respectively.

Consider this: 17 Cooper S started the race. After six laps Cooper S held the first 16 places outright. Only 9 Cooper S finished the race - 5 crashed - but they took the first 9 places. Imagine what could have been if all 17 finished the race!

Why did they win in 1966? Simply because there was nothing else on the market at the time, that met the regulations, that stood a chance against them.

And yes, we do sell the DVD. $29 plus postage.

Cheers,
Watto.

[quote="Morris 1100"]The only reason that the mini won in 1966 was because the winning car from 1965 was no longer eligible. The Minis had no opposition.[quote]

More like the ineligible Cortinas from 1965 were actually prevented from entering in 1966

Fords won in 65 and 67 and didn't turn up in 66. The Cooper S was there in all those years.
If the Cooper S was unbeatable they would have won in 65 and 67.
