You know how you wake up in the middle of the night and think "oh shi....!"

Had that last night thinking about the half round rubber seal that goes at the front of the motor between the block and gear box. Which way round does it go? Flat side in or out?

But i`ve known others to fit it the wrong way & of the ones i`ve seen they havn`t leaked,... but i`ve also seen some fitted the right way & have leaked

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

So that means the vertical flat side goes in? - hope so cause thats what I did - seemed to fit better that way

The solid verticle rib goes to the outside and can be seen when assembled by looking down between the gearbox and timing chain plate.

bugger - that means I've done it wrong - at least I've only got the box bolted on and nothing else - hope it comes apart OK without ripping the gaskets

You really should not reuse the gaskets regardless of whether they rip or not.

I flipped it the wrong way around a couple of engines ago...it leaked like a Cambodian refugee's boat.

Much sadness and wailing.

All garage work involves equal measures of enthusiasm, ingenuity and a fair degree of irresponsibility.

The gaskets should all be the same (factory specified) thickness.
It is the thickness of the crushed gasket that determines the backlash between the Primary gear and the Idler gear.

Standard thickness of block to gear case gasket is about 0.009". Just spent some time tracking down the correct gasket. Some aftermarket ones are too thick and increase the backlash between primary gear and idler.
Make sure you use the correct front gasket, the one with the step in it. All S and 1275 blocks are wider at the base but the joint bolt holes are the same distance apart between front and rear as small bore blocks. If you use the wrong front gasket it protrudes into the gearbox area.
I'm about to put short motor onto gearbox. I hope I remember the correct way for the front main bearing cap seal. Originals were cork but are now moulded rubber. Hopefully no leaks.

Ron - thanks - the one I used was the blue/grey from MS UK - they say is genuine - the one I didn't use came from a local supplier and was paper thin and looked like kraft paper

Matt and Dave - thanks I didn't really need to hear that (curls up in feotal position and sobs)
