ok, my steering rack decided to have a little accident on the drive way(deposit oil everywhere!) now is the the rack gone, or just the boot letting go and the contents escaping?! it was from a boot, but should it just exit like it did though a bad boot?!

Is oil the right stuff or grease!?

thanks

Yes, if the rack boot splits you'll dump gear oil everywhere.

You want a hypoid? gear oil for the rack, not grease.

You can oil the rack in the car.
Replace the boot(s) first. Leave car jacked up.
Tighten both the outer clips and the LH inner one.
Leave the RH inner one sitting on the tierod.
Stick the nozzle of a pump type oilcan along the shaft and pump away.
When it starts to run out, turn the steering both ways to let the rack push the surplus out. Then tighten the clip.

Oil spec is SAE90/140EP if you can find it, but 85/90EP works fine.
Last time, I used Valvoline 90LSX LSD oil, I figure the boundary lube in it additives can't hurt since you are sliding steel on steel.

BTW it is recommended that oil is used to re-lube grease filled racks.
Whatever grease it is in there, dries out. Every grease filled Mini rack I've stripped has been knackered... :x
