I've had pistons come out like that. The top ring was broken into bits, some as small as rice grains.

I've seen a few the same, very worn bores with broken rings on all four pots. Im not convinced its an overheating or ign timing issue as they have all been high mileage engines.

When the bores wear tapered and oval (as they do), the rings flex in and out on each stroke. They are only cast iron and eventually this fatigues them and they break.
This is one reason a re-ring job is seldom successful on a high mileage A series.
Always it's best to rebore the sucker and fit new oversize pistons and rings. Then it will/should last like a new one. 8)
These days a set of Hypatec pistons with rings is not much dearer than a ring set for the old ones (if you can still find them).

Looking good Kirsten. I like the black engine bay and may copy that when it comes time to remove NAV's engine.
It'll hide all the factory fitted oil leaks

Just a hint before you put the engine back in.........move the fuel pump from the top of the firewall to the rear subframe OR mount it below the line of the fuel tank outlet as it wont have to work so hard. They are a gravity fed pump and dont like to work so hard to keep the fuel pressure required.

Cheers Scott.

UPDATE UPDATE

MY ENGINE ISN'T A 998!!!!!!!

It's an 1100 or 1098 to be precise.

Well now that's a bit of a set back, as the piston's I've bought are for a 998!

Piston gudgeon to crown height is shorter on an 1100.

Aside from buying new pistons, you could get the machine shop to mill of the tops of the pistons for the right height...
