The best quote I have ever found in one of those instruction manuals was "use special tool 2G104214 or alternatively use a hammer"

One of our apprentices was working on a MkII escort... He gave it an engine wash... Lucas got angry... It took him about 2 days to sort out the electrical problems

grrr, always sh!ts me when people bag lucas electrics - I wish I could build an electrical system that lasts 40+ years of neglect and being screwed around with by ham fisted knobs

not Lucas' fault! (unless your apprentice was named Lucas)

Holden issued a service bulletin for VT commodores, telling mechanics not to wash their engines - the water sits in the wiring tray on the drivers side of the engine bay, and capillaries up the wires and into the computer -

When I got my first '74 van, it was only 11 years old.
It had a string of electrical problems, fortunately none of which resulted in a fire (although I was tempted to burn it to the ground).

Lucky it wasn't a Mk1 Cortina. No fuse box and prone to catching fire.

I think Lucas gets a pretty bad rap. After all, despite rumours to the contrary, they did not invent the darkness - although they did invent the sudden, unexpected darkness. I couldn't resist.

Watto.

Hey don't knock lucas. The chinese have copied their electrical system technology, but unfortuneately the have adapted it to 415volt 3 phase and fitted it to all the ships they make.
At least 12 volt dc won't fry you :D

Well that's better than the electricity supply they have in Chengdu.
I sent a 415V, 3 phase welder up there & it just wouldn't work right. Checked the supply and it was about 330VAC. Supposed to be 380V on a good day.
We changed the taps to 380V and it worked, just.

My Nunno used to sit the apprentices down in a chair while he went to get them the 'long weight" they had been sent to get from the tool shop. Always liked that one

I like Lucas - albeit failure prone - its easily fixable. Unlike the Bosch stuff I have played with. If it failed great masses of component went in the bin
