I have found with the hypertec pistons there is a difference between the std dish and the flat tops in the width of the oil ring groove.
When I have used the flat tops I use the hastings chrome ring set. the oil ring is a 4 piece type. the 3piece ones the scraper is a little thiner and when you assemble them onto the piston they have a little too much side clearance. I found this out when I fitted some and when I was pressing the rings and turning them to check one of the scrapers popped over the lip on the center expander.
When I measured the two types of pistons there was just over .020" difference with the ring groove. The dished ones take the 3 ring oil set and the flat tops take the chrome 4 ring oil set set.
It is strange that the eng did over 2000k's then started burning oil. I think that the oil ring scraper may have slid over the expander ring.
It's a bit of a trap with the cross reference No's that hastings have for their ring sets as the book says that they are inter-changable.
In one of their books they give the ring set No for the cast type rings for a small bore and also list them for a 1275 morris 1100 S eng. I would like to see them fit them
I was lucky as the bloke that gets me my parts is an ex BMC mechanic and can just about rattle off every part no and changes for the after market stuff around today
