I've got one on my rod change. I bought it about 10 years ago and only just got a car on the road a few weeks ago.

It totally transforms a rod change, much less sloppy. You just have to careful not to change too fast as it's still the same gearbox in the end.

The only issue with mine is that sometimes when you lift the lever to go into reverse, the slot in the bottom ball pops off the locating pins and you're left with a gearstick that can move in any direction. Not too big a deal as you are generally sitting still at the time :)

I don't know how the new design compares to the old one.

If you haven't got a great big housing running from the diff casing back to the gearstick then you've got a rod change.

I don't have the KAD one, but I have the much cheaper Mini Spares version on my daily drive (rod change).

Love it, love it, love it. Virtually no slop (but my standard rod-change was pretty precise to begin with) and there's no issue with reverse either. As mentioned though, it's still a Mini gearbox so you can beat the synchro's if you're too heavy handed with it.

Yep, that one looks almost exactly the same as mine. I think that other companies copied the original KAD design so KAD redesigned theirs a bit to make it more marketable. I've got the old one

Yes, it sounds like you have a rod change

quick changes are weird at the start, but after you are used to them a regular just feels sloppy.

i have heard stories about ones that were crap to fit and use, so make sure its a decent one :D

It's pretty straightforward really. There are 3 types of gearchange fitted to Oz Mini's, in order of age:

* Magic wand / pudding stirrer
* Remote
* Rod change

Magic wand is irrelevent to this discussion, as you can't fit a quick shift to one of these. With this gearshift, the gear stick comes out of the floor next to the clutch pedal and headlight dipper switch, and is about 3 miles long.

Remote and rod change both come out of the floor in front of the hand brake and within the car look pretty much identical. The difference is that the remote change has a large alloy housing which extends from the diff/gearbox right back to the gear shift, which encloses a single rod which is what you move to change gear. With a rod change, the gear stick goes into a box which is bolted underneath the floor, then two rods are attached between it and the gearbox/diff (hence the name).

Poke your head under the car and it'll be immediately obvious which you've got. You can fit a quick shift to either rod change or remote gearboxes, but you need to get the right one as the gear sticks and the way they attach are different.

Quickshifts are a good way to wear out balk rings really quick. Mini gearboxs, any gearboxs really shouldnt be slammed through the gears as it just wears them out quicker and goesnt really make you go any faster. A mini gearbox will be buggered in a week if you drive them like a modern car, the syncromesh is'nt up to the job. I have rebuilt many gearboxs after people have fitted quickshift kits (you can make your own using the std gearleaver) and my suggestion would be to leave it standard. You will notice that none of the "quick" mini race cars have them fitted, leave the quickshift kits to the riceburner driving P platers.
