Quickshifts are a good way to wear out balk rings really quick. Mini gearboxs, any gearboxs really shouldnt be slammed through the gears as it just wears them out quicker and goesnt really make you go any faster. A mini gearbox will be buggered in a week if you drive them like a modern car, the syncromesh is'nt up to the job. I have rebuilt many gearboxs after people have fitted quickshift kits (you can make your own using the std gearleaver) and my suggestion would be to leave it standard. You will notice that none of the "quick" mini race cars have them fitted, leave the quickshift kits to the riceburner driving P platers.

so you reckon no & the otehrs say yes.

i dont want it to smash around in. if it is going to make it less sloopy then why not.

It is not going to make it less sloppy than a standard shift in good condition.
It may improve a worn out shift but you can get the same result by fixing your old shift. (it may cost less too)

You can only change gear as fast as the gearbox will let you, no matter what shift you run. The standard shift is lighter and easier to use than a quickshift.

IMO it's useless fitting a quickshift if the mechanism is sloppy.
Fixing the slop depends what model box it is.

Remote and magic wand:
With my remote shift box I `hardfaced' the balls with nickel (cast iron arc welding) electrode, then polished them back to size. The deposit was too hard to file. That was 10 years ago, it's still good.
Replace the 2 bronze bushes in the diff housing, they wear first.
If the toggle linkage on top of box has worn parts replace them with good s/h ones, and keep the clamp bolts TIGHT.

Rodchange:
The natural rubber bush on gearbox for the top rod rots out due to oil, so make and fit a steel or polyurethane bush.
If the bits inside the gearshifter box get worn, I would go find a better one. But new shaft bushes etc can be made to eliminate wear.
Fit new spring pins in the selector shaft coupling if worn. If coupling pin holes are worn, redrill new ones 90° round (but coupling is pretty hard) or buy a new coupling.

I was heading out to mini king to buy a new rubber one this morning.
Sounds like a drmini special run on the lathe could be in order?

IMHO the biggest advantage of the quikshift is the longer length of the top part. It moves the shift into a much more comfortable position. With Cobra seats and a harness I couldn't reach first gear. The quikshift fixed that and was the main reason I bought it.

As far as synchros go, I've had the same ones for almost 20 years (of daily driving).

I think they're an improvement over the standard shift (even if the original is in good condition) - but they do take a little getting used to.

Cheers, Ian

I guess that's it.

You're better off thinking of it as a nice shift rather than a quick shift.

It seems to slot into the gears in a more positive way.

Then again, maybe it's all in my imagination :D

Yeah, this happens to me with the standard rod change.
I just don't lift the gear stick first.
Push over to the right until it hits the stopper, then lift and put into reverse.

Yep, thanks for the suggestion. I kind of do that now.

Cheers,

I had one from day one ...and i wanted it because all minis had it when i got into minis in 1996...was a cheap hot up part back then.
Changes are quicker and smother but like others said change to quickly and youll do ya sincros like i did the first time...ive learnt my lesson..now...i now double clutch all the time just in case..
also the stick is longer....i hated that part so i cut it down...
its bling...and mine came with an anodised blue part on the bottom that no one see anyway...and its another part you can add to the cars resume..
buy it and try it.....if you dont like it .....but i know you will ....sell it....

I would just like to point out (again) that the changes are no quicker. :x

You can change just as quick with a normal gearchange (ie: as fast as the syncros will allow)
If you want to change gears faster you need to get a dogbox.
