Mine doesn't have a flap on the tank neck and its been registered in two states.
I thought the flaps were on the cars in japan, and usually removed when imported.

A bit O/T-
I wondered the same thing Doogs, as my local Woolies/Caltex diesel pump says only suitable for trucks...
So how many `modern diesel fuel' pumps are there about now- it'a probably a good thing some modern diesel cars will do 800+ km to a tank... they might need it to find another pump.

Also O/T - but in reply to the Doc - the pumps that say 'only suitable for Trucks' are probably hi-flow... They don't fit down the neck of the average diesel-powered car (bigger bore nozzle), only down the necks of things like Cruisers/Patrols and bigger. I can't fit a hi-flow nozzle down the neck of my R51 Pathfinder Diesel. That's no bad thing - it's the same tank as the petrol version, and standard pumps make the diesel foam up enough as is - I can get at least another Litre in there after it first clicks, sometimes two. :) Hi-flow would just make it foamier, and even harder to properly fill the tank.

o/t again

I've had 4 diesel cars so far

Peugoet 307 - could fill with hi flow pump, it fitted into the neck
VW Golf - sort of fits, could get enough inot the tank to get to the next pump if I took it slowly
VW Jetta - as above
Saab 9.3 - no chance of getting anything into the tank with hi flow (I have the shoes to prove it)

There are still a suprising number of stations with only the hi flow pump around - I seem to keep finding them

I thought there were 2 grades of diesel now- the usual old distillate crap, and the low-sulphur stuff?

Some places have two grades - but both are low sulphur. BP have done an 'Ultimate Diesel' - that's why there are two grades. Some have reported improved economy/performance with Common Rail TD's. But all diesels are now required to be low sulphur - Euro IV compliant, I believe. And we're only a few months behind Europe in the implementation of their standards - although our compliance happens a lot closer to the date than it does in Europe.

I should clarify - my R51, I can get the end of the Hi-Flow nozzle in there, but it's not a good fit, and it's no fun. Have to be a lot more attentive, can get splashed with foam, etc. Not worth it. Only use it if there's no choice.

Now, what we need is for someone to take a little Common Rail, Direct Injection, Variable Vane Turbo Diesel and do a conversion to a Mini - the ultimate economy car, and with enough torque to shred tyres.

There is..or was...

Diesel
Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel [50 ppm sulphur] (Was being sold up until end of last year I think?)
Extra-Low Sulphur Diesel [10 ppm sulphur] (Current Standard)
And then the winter mixes. (With caltex is is Highland and Alpine Mix)

AFAIK it is now illegal to sell anything other than diesel that starts as XLSD.

Also, you will notice some servos selling 'premium' diesels. eg, Caltex have Vortex Diesel at some sites.

I've had my R51 Pathfinder TD for three months and I've had no issues using high flow yet. :?

Well, that's the naughty way which risks getting you into hot water if you are caught. Not an honest option. :)
