Just a short one fellas, im in need of a new or second hand fuel tank at the moment, but my question is...are fuel tanks in all coopers and leylands all the same size across the board??? Also how hard is it to create another fuel tank on the other side of a leyland like twin tanks like cooper s's, like any processes of hookin up another fuel line, like whats the jist with that?

LH tanks are all pretty much the same I think, except LS is bigger.
Our `78 Clubbie S has the exact same tank as my `64 850 and others had.
RH tanks... mounting it properly is the biggest problem, but not hard. Best method is buy the mounting kit with the proper bracket under.

Hookup- a steel pipe runs across the front of the boot with a Y piece at LH end, so both tanks connect together into the fuel pump.
Instead of the pipe I used 1/4" USA made fuel hose, and a brass tee fitting on mine, I check it regularly and it's still OK after 10 years.

There are 3 tyres of standard LH tanks.

1. 850/Deluxe/K - Has a drain in the bottom, 3/16 fuel outlet

2. Early Clubman - No drain, 3/16 fuel outlet

3. Late Clubman ( 77/78 ) - No drain, 5/16 fuel outlet. - (LS had larger capacity of this type)

Trust me on this one.....I needed a replacement tank for JAM, and ended up with one of each of these mentioned.

In a nutshell, BMC / Leyland dropped the drain and increased the fuel outlet / fuel line diameter in the Mini, over the life of the car in OZ.

There is another type of L/H tank, early 850 (up to about 63) I think had a ring of bolts holding in sender rather than locking ring as on later!

Funny story about a fuel tank. My dad had to replace the tank in his van (back in the '70s) he needed a new tank for some reason I can't remember but anyway when he went to pick it up from the mechanic they realised it needed a key for the petrol cap. The mechanic didn't know where it was but had a bucket (9ltrs in size) full of keys. So the mechanic and my dad tipped the bucket on the floor and started trying each key... roughly an hour later and with only 5 keys left they finally found it...

That tank looks like a pretty good deal for only $2... good luck.

I have that one in the 850 project mobile....I nearly had it out last week except someone had bogged the drain pipe and fuel line leading down to the Fuel Pump (an American aftermarket jobbie).

There are 6 hex headed self tapers (I guess)..and two bolts for the fuel guage sender connections in the middle of it.

Remember if you ever change the speedo, this sender uses only the early 850 fuel gauge. Later ones not compatible. :?

Well!! I have no speedo at this stage....and don't really like the look of the original 850 instrument either! (shock horror)

Good to know that I need to investigate 850 Fuel Gauge specifications though.....thanks once again to...Thar Doctor

One for the Doc

Are both the LH and RH tanks the same shape with the only difference being the location of the filling point?.
In other words can I convert a LH to a RH by moving the Filling spout to the other end or is there some thing else to complicate things?

Cheers

Many have tried to do this over the years, with scant success. They are mirror images of one another, and the lumpy bit in behind will foul the shock mount and inner guard if you try to put a LH one in RH side.

New RH ones are still made in UK by Mini Machine but cost a heap of $$$.

I was looking at a left hand tank the other day and thought it wouldn't be that hard to make one if the need arose. The filler tube could be ratted from a RH tank. It might not end up spot on but I bet it would do the job and be a reasonable facsimile of the original. Or moulds could be made and then make a fibreglass one? Would beat paying the sometimes stupid money people sometimes ask for them.
