OK , will look for a scale weber (closer than the one I've found on ebay in Singapore ....) anyway while still searching for the elusive engine bay photo .

WOOHOO , Watto strikes again , this photo is on the bottome of page 48 of issue 8 and is a still from the 1964 Neptune racing team promotional movie , another shot shows the wheel wells being red as well . This is a 997 cooper , originally Cherry red with Platinum roof , twin SU's and of all things a lightweight battery in the engine bay above the clutch housing . Looks like this will be the version I'll be doing :D :D :D

Nice looking little model, well done.

Dicko

Thanks Dicko Sorry I posted this in a hurry before going out for tea tonight ! Yes as you can see the model has alot of flaws on it poor paint incorrect wheels etc but as I was saying this is the way I bought it straight out of the hobby shop cabinet.Besides anyone who knows of my modelling abilities knows I'm capable than better than this!!

After posting this I realised you guys are refering to the Neptune car.

Sean

Oh, shucks Ian, you beat me to it.

Yes, I was about to say Issue 8, bottom of page 48 - oh, I just did anyway.

Yes, this was the Cooper. The Cooper S which came after it (1071) is the car that was wrecked at Warwick Farm, and its replacement - with 1275cc ran a Weber as far as I can tell (no pics, sorry). This was the car that was LHD-capable (the steering rack had two spindles, so it could be either LHD or RHD depending on the circuit). According to Neville Watts - PM's engineer - Peter only ran it LHD once or twice, and the pic at Catalina in the ad is the only pic I have seen of it (would love it if someone has another pic).

This Cooper S was sold to Jeff Dunkerton and eventually went through a few owners, before turning up again and being bought (what was left of it) by Andrew Bergan at GB's Mini & Moke World.

PM replaced it with another Cooper S which became the black Tridents Racing Team car, then that became the light blue Shell car, which was in turn replaced with another Mini, which was later repainted in the yellow Shell colours.

So, how about 6 models eventually - the red and white Cooper, the same car in Neptune colours, the Neptune Cooper S with LHD, the Tridents car, the light blue Shell car and the final yellow Shell car - what an awesome set that would be.

By the way, Ron Williams has done a brilliant version of the yellow Shell car, complete with trailer and matching 1800 ute.

Cheers,
Watto.

There was a shot of Manton's engine in Sports Car World magazine around 1970-1 - the Shell yellow car with the bonnet open close up. It shows an incredibly simple uncluttered engine - Weber carb, Wade cam, presumably Brownrigg exhaust, no booster, very little else to indicate its potency (130bhp). The story tells how Manton lightened every nut and bolt to the bare minimum in his quest to stay competitive.

Shell made a big thing at the time of Manton being able to do 50 second laps around Calder, one of their ads featured a blow by blow 8,000rpm lap with Manton at the wheel. The time was the time to beat for the Minis and stood for some time - until about 1973 or 4 I think when Terry Wade went under it - just.

.... and talking about Tamiya mini kits as we were... How do people widen the track so that the wheels don't hide away under the arches??

Cheers, Ian
