Thanks for that... I was thinking no one was gonna reply

When I pulled the old one off it was glued to the cover but not the head. I thought this was a bit wierd as the directions say glue both sides of the gasket... so I was a bit confused as this is the first time I've changed ANY gasket and anything really mechanical on a car.

By gluing it to the cover you can get it lined up prettywell, spend a little time getting it straight and it won't leak! Do you have an oil pressure gauge in your dash? If so check it for leaks as these will drop oil on your floor mats/carpets. Steve

I do but it's not connected anymore. When I went to pick it up an auto sparky was doing something behing the dash and busted/disconnected it which spilt oil everywhere. What's what I thought the smell was originally.

Do you mean 5-6 hours to let the cement dry b4 bolting the cover back on or 5-6 hours b4 starting the car?

Just a pic

Hi Marvin,

Does your engine have tappet side covers, 1 with a pipe for engine breathing that is merely crimped closed at the top? My 72 Clubby has this I noticed that oil (only little amounts) and fumes (seemed like quite a lot) were escaping when the engine was running. Replaced with another cover with no pipes as this engine does not have a breathing system and fumes stopped!
BTW, (sorry to hijack thread) I've just had engine out and replaced all gaskets as it had an oil leak that got progressinvely worse until it dropped a lake on my garage floor and the engine bay, engine, subframe, under car down one side was covered in oil. When it came around to replace theside cover gaskets, the bolts were not even hand tight   I think the oil was coming from there and didn't need the full treatment, but at least I now know the state of the engine! Hijack over.

Oops, just seen your pic. The fumes will most likely be coming from the breather. You need a pipe from there to somewhere - carb? bottle?

I have a tube coming from the top left of the cover (seen top left of first pic) but there is a tube that is crimped/blocked on the charcoal thing? and a hole/opening down the bottom of the charcole thing (as seen in second pic)

In your first pic, just to the right of the manifold, there is the top of the breather tube that is either attached to the tappet side cover or to the timing chain cover. If there is no pipe going from there to anywhere else, the fumes will be coming out of that. You should be able to see and feel what is happening when the engine is running.

Regards
Gavin

Yeah, the thing circled in the first pic. Should have a pipe going somewhere - to the carb in a good place.

Right so would the thing circled in the first pic go to the hose clamped off (red line) in the second pic?

Hey marvin, Don't forget to also replace the rubber grommets around the two bolts that hold down the rocker box. Your picture looks like they are crying out to be replaced.

There's a guy over this side of the bay who can supply them easy as.

Cheers m8 :)
