Looks to me like a 68,69 model round lights first of the 13" wheels so possibly no plate and I think they should be on lefthand side pre 70

My Guess is this is a early moke looking at where the rear view Mirror is mounted and the shape of the front indicator Lamps and the rear lamps, In my opinion this vechicle would never have had a compilance Plate fitted It would have been fitted with an ID plate

What John said, it's probably too early to have a compliance plate. The rest of the chassis number (after YJBAB8R) will confirm.

FWIW my 71 Moke does not have one, it went missing before I got it. But since I was (eventually) able to prove it was previously registered in Vic I could register it again. NSW may or may not be so accomadating!

Cheers,

Cheers,

I hope they are, the compliance plate on my `79 Moke went AWOL before I bought it. But the numbers on the shroud are all there, and legible...

Have a look on the rail under the drivers seat - pre 71s had the chassis numbe stamped there as well.

Bloke is correct.

The Moke looks from the photos to be a 1968 or 69 big wheel Moke. If it originally had the 1098cc engine then it was 1969 (1098 introduced in April 1969). The mirror was not changed to the later position down under the windscreen until after the Army test recommendations (end of 1970).

The flat bonnet seems to have been changed for the bonnet with the two ridges in early 1970. I'm not 100% sure when the taillights were changed, but believe it was January 1970 - John may have a better idea.

That means there will not, nor never should have been a Compliance Plate fitted to this car. There would have been a vehicle ID plate, if it was a 1968 car, but being 1969 (as I believe it is from the photos), then there would probably not have been an ID plate fitted either.

So, I would say this Moke is well worth getting, especially as it is not yet complete and the body and engine are to standard spec (as far as it looks). There are very few of this model around, and with the taillights still in original position it would not be too big a task to rebuild to standard spec - if that's what you want.

If, on the other hand, you want a Moke to personalise and maybe hot up a bit, as appears to have been the current owners intention, may I humbly suggest that you don't buy this rare model Moke and leave it for someone else to take back to original spec.

Of course if there is any hint of Top Gear buying it, I would rather see it become some crazy hoon mobile in regular use.

If you would like more info, grab some more details and detailed photos. Look to see if the taillights appear to be original (no holes welded up) - but who would bother changing them? Look for holes drilled for an ID plate behind the master cylinders - there should be none, but if it has had a plate then there would be 2 for a Compliance plate and 4 for an ID plate.

Fuel cap should not have the little chain that connects to the fuel filter (easily changed though).

Not sure what else there is specific to 1969.

Cheers,
Watto.
