I would post a photo but my computer is a little bit dead, damaged or corrupted user profile, may have to do a rebuild, so no more photos until further notice, I dont have access to my programs.

Isn't that just another Clubby with same HP as the 1275 Cooper S motor?
Like the Oz GT?

what HP were these GTS really...?
Specs please... :P

From what we've seen in the Members Gallery he's possibly not too far off.

I want your workshop and all you tools/toys, but apparently one of the 10 commandments is I can't covet. Bugger that, I want your workshop and all you tools/toys!

Ha Ha I knew this would happen with my computer a bit broken, I dont have access to my files so I.ll have to do this from memory, the GTS engine was a reworked late GT engine, due to some shortages the South African Leyland engineers had to make some changes bearings etc, 75bhp at 5,750rpm, 77 foot pounds of torque at 3,400rpm, 9.75.1 compression, I,m sure they used a different cam, close ratio gearbox 1st to 3rd taller 4th,twin 1 1/4 SU,s, 3.44.1 diff, single 36 litre tank,a very spartan interior and other changes (metal to panel ratio) meant the GTS was nearly 20kgs lighter than the Cooper S and GT giving it a 0-100 of 11.6 seconds and a straight line top speed of 158kph, it used 4.5x10 tyres and the engineers changed the castor and camber for maximum cornering efficiency, the best cars made were from July 73 till November 74,the legend of the GTS was made on its agility, acceleration and no comfort all performance attitude ( didnt get a heater till the 1975 model changeover).
The chances of finding an original one are the equivalent of the rocking horse that does solid gold nuggets and brings you beer when you whistle.

So pretty much a Cooper S/Clubby GT engine spec for output, in SA clothing then.
HP & torque pretty much the same.

On 26 July 1973, Leyland launched the Leyland Mini GTS (1275 c.c.) as a successor to the high performance Cooper “S” and Mini GT models at a price of R 2280. The GTS featured 10” Rostyle wheels, wheel arch extensions, servo assisted disc brakes (190,5 mm), a 36 litres fuel tank, matt black grille, distinctive side identification stripe running over the bonnet and thickly padded and well-contoured front seats as well as maintaining the 3 pot instrument cluster that included the tachometer. Engine has a compression ratio of 9,75 to 1, (bore 70,6 mm x stroke 81,3 mm.), producing 74 b.h.p. and a top speed of 155 km/h (96 m.p.h.), maximum torque (N.m) of 103 at 3500 r.p.m. and a final drive of 3,44:1 was used with twin 1¼” SU carburetors. Dry-cone suspension was used.

CAR road-tested the GTS in their January 1974 edition and was very impressed with this newcomer. In their opinion “the Clubman GTS probably deserves the title ‘the most exciting Mini ever built’ and a worthy model in the Mini-Cooper tradition. The over-the-bonnet stripes in contrasting colours were considered “to add to the provocative charm of the little car’s looks.” The GTS was considered to have all the elements to make it a smoking-tyres performance model; it produced some exciting figures in their performance tests: 0-60 mph inside 11 seconds and 150-plus km/h in a straight line. CAR summarized their impressions on the GTS as follows: “ This is the glamour car in the Mini family, and intended very much for the young at heart. It has the ability to hold its own against some pretty hot GT machinery. A combination of snappy looks and potent performance make this the most exciting Mini. As the manufacturer suggests, this is no car for the legendary ‘little old lady’ but for someone looking for a potent and exhilarating little chariot, the GTS has a lot to offer for the price.”

Does anyone know if the build quality of Sydney-built Leylands was better/worse than the english?

The build quality varied through the production run but I would bet that they were better than the UK built cars. The Australian workers were not deliberately sabotaging cars like the communist workers in Birmingham.
The late Zetland (to the end of 74) cars were probably the worst assembled but with the best bodies, the trim was stuck in the cars very badly but the Zetland cars were less inclined to rust due to the roto-dip. The Zetland cars got locally asembled motors which were probably better than the UK motors.

The Enfield cars (after 74) were probably the best assembled but with the worst bodies and engines. The later cars rust much worse than the earlier cars.

I'll go out on a limb...

I'm just a little weird, I suppose, but I like the South African Wolseley 1000, which had the front of a Wolseley Hornet, the tail of a Mini and the doors from Australia (with wind-up windows and quarter-vents).

I prefer the Aussie Clubman GT to the South African GTS, especially the early ones with the Cooper S engine. I prefer the Aussie windows to the UK Mk3 windows - much better for our weather.

My dream would be an early police-spec Clubman GT- 1.5" SUs and all the good bits, a true 100 mph car.

For pure style though it would have to be a Radford de Ville. The one featured in Issue 14 of TME (owned by Cooper S legend John Parnell) was the nicest Mini I have ever travelled in, and believe me, I've been in a few.

Cheers,
Watto.

Seeing this car in TME way back when......geeze it gave me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. You've started a love affair here, my good man
