I want to get the definitive answer to whether a standard LHS tank can be used in the RHS position - turn it around after the filler neck is cut off (and repositioned if you still want the twin fillers). I've done some searching and all I can find so far is hearsay and a few "apparently it can be done" comments.

Has anyone actually done this?

If it IS possible, I would like to use a standard tank, cut off & blank off the neck, turn it around and marry the two tanks with a 1" pipe top & bottom so that it doesn't take 1/2 hour to fill the tanks with a tiny equalising pipe.

I've not attempted it or seen it done, but I would doubt it's possible at all -- you'd need a mirror image of the tank, not just rotating it through 180*.

Yeah it's been done before but you need to bash clearance in it (or cut and weld) for the shock mount, and cut away to clear the battery, and it just won't look right when you open the boot. Wrong shape....

A big pipe between them is not a great idea IMO- on corners the fuel will all slosh to the outside one, cap will tend to leak (they all do).

Why don't you just put 25L in each one like everybody else does... it works for me and the 15,000 S owners out there. :D

You can buy plastic RH tanks now, Paul Gulson makes 'em up in Qld.

Or just buy a Rover EFI tank for a bit more capacity?

You can buy new steel RH tanks. (I would do anything to avoid the plastic one)

I just put Spaceboy and a tube lube on bus so you cancel your plastic tank order :P

I don't have anything against the actual tank, I just don't like some of the other products that he sells.

I vote for a 35L efi tank. No drilling, offsets your weight in the car, extra 10 litres, what more can you want?

The thrill of welding a petrol tank? Nothing like the 'nuts in your throat' feeling to know you're alive...

(I know it can be done safely as my mechanic does it, but he's old school and knows what he's doing. I wouldn't.)

I welded a new neck into my RH one last year, with oxy. :P
Some petrol thieving villain had buggered the bayonet in the neck and no cap would seal it. So I bought a fake neck and cut the plate off. Trimmed the tank to suit.

Fill tank with hot water, drain, repeat 2 times.
Filled again to 1/2 way up neck, and welded it in that state.
Can't see the weld, it's inside the rubber grommet.

Sounds like a reasonable idea to me.

Yep, I got the EFI tank and now find myself with a spare right hand tank.

That would be the possibility if my car was going to have wheels in the next decade! All my cars are just an explosion of loose parts at the moment.
