I am planning to restore a 1978 Mini Clubman 1275LS which has not been registered for 10 years. What issues may I expect to come across when I try and get a blue slip in NSW? I am mainly worried about the engine and polution control system which appears to have been removed many years ago. :(

As long as it doesnt "look" like its supposed to have emission control on it, i had an old emission control had and all the holes in the front of the head were tapped off.

No problems registering it, just find someone whos decent at giving you blue slip.

i realise the process is different down here, but when i went for my first roadworthy test, the bloke said i needed the anti-pollution gear because there was evidence that it was supposed to be there (eg mounting holes, brackets etc). he ALSO said that if i put grub screws in the front of the head, it would not look as much like somethink was missing (you can't change the fact that because of the age of the car, it has to have it. well, you CAN, but...)

we all know the gear hinders the performance. if you don't have it and can't find it, try and find someone who won't be worried about the gear, and give you a blue slip without it. if you have the gear, stick it on for your blue slip, then take it off afterwards :D

Most if this so-called smog gear is NLA now anyway.
The motors spewed the same stuff out the tailpipe with or without it, the air injection just diluted what came out the back by adding air. And burned more fuel to drive the air pump to do it.

The 4 threads in the head (once you screw the pipe adaptors out) are 7/16" UNF. Grubscrews this size are expensive, you can use old seatbelt bolts and cut them off, grind flush and paint em.

I think I need to look for a nice 12G940 head with no air pump holes. :)

Note the only 1275 head with the air injection was the 12G1316.
These work fine once you plug the holes... so don't toss yours away.

Essentially, if the compliance plate states emission control, then according to the transport authority it has been engineered with emissions control and should be registered with it.

Just find a good mechanic that does your blue slips for you. Once you have the blue slip, the transport authority isnt going to care either way because the onus is on the mechanic, not you.

ADR 27A (the ADR for pollution gear) has been removed from the books.
You do not need to comply to ADR27A anymore.

Where would you get the leaded Super fuel to test it with anyway.

So don't worry about the pollution gear and worry about more important things like brakes and steering.
