Well once I've got the design right alloy will be easy, as I know a bloke thats got a water jet cutter. But, that also costs money, so I'm not apposed to doing it all myself with whatever scrap I've got lying around

No external hinges and no handle. It had 2 security keyholes and that was it!

The bracket the bolts the hinge to the floor. Is it possible the it provide the 'stop' for the hinge rather that the hinge hitting the body work (and eventually bending it).

ozmotorsport, ain't seen that name 'round these parts for a while.

JC, yeh, you can add a stop to it, or the better option imho would be a strut to limit the opening (like the factory chain/wire)

I know it wouldn't necessarily be practical and the mechanism would take up loads of space, but i always thought it would be cool if you could build a drawer unit.

Just click the handle and the whole thing slides right out...

great stuff, if your going for the smooth and de bumperised look you should de seam it too (if you havent already) and shave the boot and just have an electric boot opening.

should end up looking tops

I've de-bumpered, but I'm not deseaming. And I will be shaving the bootlid handle as well.
The hinges are doubled up 3mm alloy plate, and the mounts on the bootlid are 1.6 or 2mm steel angle (from the disposable gas bottle mounts from my welder :D) and the boot floor mounts are 3 or 4mm thick angle steel.
