i did gasket and goo, but then i'd never done it before and there was goo everywhere. I still don't know if I did it right, but no leaks so far (5 months)

I just use a gasket, but make sure both surfaces are as close to perfectly clean as they can be. Wont last as long but will be a lot easier to clean and replace with a new gasket.

I like loctite no. 3 aviation gasket sealer for water gaskets, use it sparingly on both sides of gasket and it's not too messy, cleans up ok on disassembly.

I love that stuff....It should be the gasket alone is enough, but if you have it there then why not stick some on rather than hope that some clown hasn't jimmied the pump off with a crowbar and damaged the journal.

I use a very thin film of Permatex gasket sealant, only because I tend to find the mating surfaces for water-jacket items are corroded and the gasket is no longer sufficient to seal by itself.

Good if used sparingly. Just need to remember when applying it to gaskets, your'e not icing a cake!

I agree.
I use nothing on head and manifold gaskets, and Loctite 515 Master gasket on everything else. It doesn't leak, gasket or no gasket... great stuff.

Repco at Camperdown seemed to have a decent range of Loctite when i bought mine - the only reason i remember is that there were so f-ing many of them, i didn't know which was the best one to pick.....so can't say whether they have the one mentioned in the thread...the one i bought came in a green box!! :)
