Hey All,
I have a 998 motor out of a clubman that i am currently stripping down for a total rebuild. What sort of performance gear do you guys recommend? some people have suggested a racing cam/flat top pistons? I just want a good cheap reliable engine with a bit more grunt than standard. What do you all think? any help/suggestions on the rebuild appreciated.

If you are stripping it completley, then definitely fit a 1098 crank and pistons. You can then ignore that 99H8 engine number...you will have yourself a 1098

More grunt - cheap mod!

If you can find one, throw on a 12g295 head, from the 998 cooper. You'll need the flat top pistons though, and yep the 1100 crank is a good way to get a really torquey motor. If you love a high revver, stick to the 998 crank. Put extactors and a good set of twin 1.25 su's (1.5s too big), a single 1.5 SU, or go for a weber.

The 12g295 can also be found on minimatic motors, some sprites, and wolsley hornets/riley elfs.

Cheers
Matt

Why would you need flat tops with the 295 matt? I have a 295 on mine with dished pistons... :?

Yep, put 1100 stuff in it. The 1100 and 998 blocks are identical! You still have the same engine number, too!

I'd go 1100 crank and pistons. 12G202 head thats been tricked out with bigger valves and ported and stuff. RE-13 cam. 1.75" SU (preferably HIF44). LCB's with 1.75" zorst.

That would beat a stock Cooper S, i'd say!

Remember, ya will want discs to make it stop!!

Mini Mad,
If using a 998 crank & a 12g295 head, you need Flat top pistons to bring the compression ratio back to respectable.

This is because the 295 head has a large combustion chamber volume, compared to the standard head. Using dished pistons means that you'll have a much lower CR than standard. Good for fitting a supercharger tho :D

The 998 Cooper actually had raised crown pistons to increase the compression ratio

If you're using an 1100 crank, the flat tops aren't as necessary, as the CR comes closer to normal, (but not high).

Cheers
Matt
