I've got a new manifold gasket here, and it's the type that is metal on one side, and paper on the other - I normally have the straight paper ones - which way around does it go?

paper to the head face, metal to the manifold?

if it is the Rover gasket the metal belongs to the manifold not the head.
there should "manifold side" stamped in the metal

When you think about it the cylinder head is water cooled and the exhaust manifold is air cooled. The manifold side of the gasket is the side that needs the help. 8)
