thats a pretty good idea david, will definately look into that one, do they have small-ish containers, dont have the biggest amount of space available. Bugger, thought theyd be pretty cheapish.

sounds like the self storage garage market could have a Niche market with Car Resto's.i would be a great idea for the self storage guys to have a Line of say 8 garages for this sort of thing and then the rest for normal stuff.

Here in WA you can pick up decent 20' containers for $2000
For a longer term it makes sense to buy one & sell at the same price.

There used to be lots of "DIY Garages" in the US that allowed you to store and work on your own car away from home. You rented your own garage space to work in plus they had lifts, welders, port-a-power etc available to hire on site by the hour. Unfortunately insurance premiums killed them all off.

I've wondered for a few years now if it would be possible to start such a business here in Aus? Maybe as a "Restoration Club" rather than a business? :?

A good idea as a refuge for innercity-high-density-unit-dwellers.

Exactly what I meant. Somewhere people can restore (or just fix) a car when they have the know-how, or willingness to give it a go, but nowhere at home to do it.

The one I saw in the US was an old warehouse with about 20 garages down one wall (accessible from inside only), with a two post and a four post lift down the far end from the entrance. On the opposite side from the garages was the tool hire area, dunnies and a "lunch room" with chairs and tables. Most of the blokes just sat around the lunch room talking cars and drinking beer. I got the impression it was more of a place to hang out than to get some serious work done. But at least if you needed a hand there was usually someone there to "hold that bit there" or whatever.

I know a motel that was used for a pron shoot, the owners were very pissed off because they thought it was a travel guide video and they were in some scenes (not the pron scenes)

I don't know what upset them more, appearing in a porno (fully clothed in a restaurant scene) or the fact that because they thought it was a travel guide they gave them free food and a big discount on the room.

well they would of got screwed either way

Someone did set one up in Sydney a long while ago, it was a failure. I have a magazine story from when it started up.

There was also one just off Warrigal Rd Moorabbin (SE suburbs of Melbourne), not far from where the Shannons Auction rooms now are, I remember going there to use their steam cleaning equipment on my rally Mini, probably about 30 years ago (...my God I'm old  )

Sort of what I've got in mind for semi retirement back on the Sunshine coast- have a BIG shed and let young blokes come and fix their cars and be on hand to help out and have some of the specialist gear on hand. Charge a peppercorn fee to cover overheads and suppliment the work on my own vehicle

Straight out of John Carpenter's Christine, although newer rules mean you car must not be possessed by evil spirits.
