Just wondering if someone would be able to tell me what the possible problems with a mini auto (rover) is if all forward gears drive fine, but reverse has no drive. If the front wheels are off the ground the wheels drive in reverse and speed up with revs, but with the car on the ground the car doesnt move. The best way to describe it is a manual clutch slipping completely.

So list away possible faults please.

Someone also suggested replacing the valve type thing on the drivers side of the box. Would this achieve anything?

I'm going to guess that the reverse band is slipping.
If it is, engine comes out, front cover off the gearbox and ajust it.

Slip in reverse = items 4, 5 or 6. (from auto manual)
4: reverse band adjustment, or reverse servo feed pipe seals.
5: clean valve block, regulator valve or reverse booster piston faulty.
6: check top & reverse clutch booster piston or shutoff valve.

R band can be adjusted in car, if lining not worn out.
There IS room to get the cover off.

is this the same diagnostic for similar issue but forwards? My Rover is slipping going fowards AND backwards.... Only seems to happen though in the first say 5 mins of driving. After that, doesnt seem to be any issue. I always warm her up until the heat guage moves to the white line in the middle too... so she isnt cold....

She is going in to see "Uncle Malure" tomorrow morning but its always nice to know what I am in for...

Black book auto manual says
"slip or no drive in all gears = items 7,8,13,20, 23"

7 = oil level
8 = carry out pressure check (at plug on filter housing)
13 = remove and clean valve block
20 = check oil pump, flow valve, oil supply and feed pipe seals, main oil strainer.
23 = check low pressure valve.

If it's only doing it when cold, I'd suspect the oil might be a bit thick- what grade are you running?

hmm... that sounds like (hopefully) an easy fix. It was serviced by Greig when I first got her (March) so I trust he is using the right oil. I have only driven about 300 kms since I got her and it hasnt yet been three months for a change over (I change every three months typically with KMX brand engine oil from K mart which seems to go well in the Moke). I cant remember the grade, but its the one others have recommended. Is this not right for the Rover?

My white matic does that sometimes. I just change the oil and then shes fine again. Fuel pump was leaking and contaminating the oil, every time it did that, I had no reverse. I have no where near the mechanical knowledge of most of the people on here, thats just my personal experience. Good luck! :)

Reverse needs more oil pressure to prevent slip.
With hot oil (80°C), oil pressure at 1000 rpm in the forward gears is 75-85 lb/in². This pressure is at the test plug near the filter, not the engine.
When reverse is selected, pressure there rises to 115-125 lb/in².
Or it should......
