I started the moke this morning with choke on, and she fires up, but just dies.

Sometimes, I find that she is OK with a bit of a rev, so I started her again and put my foot down on the throttle... she fired up again, but she spluttered and splattered like she was on her last legs...

Any ideas anyone? I dont like it when she is sick... :(

Saturday. She started fine and enjoyed a drive down to the shops and back. There was no issue at all.

All leads are connected. That was one of my first checks. I presumed she wasn’t firing all cylinders, but all leads are on and connected. I checked the speedo and choke cable and they seem OK as well. There was no obvious signs of air/bubbles in the radiator or oil (blown gasket) which I checked as well. The battery is good and there is sufficient charge to turn over the starter motor etc

Dashpot oil is clean and there is good pressure pushing the top back in.

Havent checked the fuel float, but will try that tonight.

other things to check...

- Make sure the distributor hasn't worked loose and changed the timing on you
- Check the plugs are all good ( doubt that this is the problem, but i once had a plug that was only two weeks old die on me and another one just play up and the car ran like poo, must of been a dud batch of plugs)
- Check the points are good (if worn, replace them, reset the gap, and the timing)

However i doubt any of these are likely. To me it sounds like a fuel problem. Is it a mechanical or eleectric pump? Take the hose of and check that there is good fuel pressure whilst the pump is working. If there is is, check that fuel is getting through the float chamber.

if you have strong spark on all four cylinders, and you are sure the plugs are good then you know the problem is most likely in the fuel system. So work your way through from pump to carby, eliminating any problems along the way.

OK she is doing it again... after a trouble free drive from Sydney all the way through the national park to Wollongong then from there up the mountain, down the mountain, across the country to Dapto, then to the dam, then along the freeway at a nice 100km/h all the way home, she is now doing this again.

I have:

1. Checked points, sanded them down so no build up etc
2. Checked leads one by one to make sure are on same plug
3. Checked fuel line etc and pump works ok
4. Checked air filter and that seems ok
5. Checked dash pot and there is good pressure/oil
6. Checked the distributor to make sure its on OK and not lose
7. Checked the fuel float and that doesnt seem to stick and there is fuel in there too
8. Checked choke cable and that seems to be OK too.

This list of checks seemed to have worked last time, but she is not playing this time.

Thoughts/ideas?

have you taken the carby apart and given it a clean?
when i was changing needles there must have been a bit of dirt get in the dashpot and after any throttle the dashpot(what the needle is attatched too not sure of its correct name) was sticking, after giving it a clean out it was fine

Have you checked your fuel pump lately? is it the original mechanical fuel pump? time to check the diaphram or upgrade?

does it only do this when it's cold when the choke is out?

does it do this at operating temp with the choke in?

No that was my next step/thought. Although I am worried about the whole "putting it back on and making sure everything is fine and adjusted properly" bit hence not trying it yet.

I unhooked the end of the fuel pipe and it flowed strongly. It has an upgraded electric pump anyway. The mechanical one went ages ago.
