My dad had a Cooper S, rego was 593 802 SA. BRG with white roof, not sure when he sold it, it would have been close to 30-35 years ago. I know it is a long shot but I would love to let him know that is still going. I think it was a mark 1?

BRG and a white roof certainly won't narrow it down by much. Old pics are a wonder, accessories, distinguishing features and also last know locations (town, suburb, city), new owner's names help a lot. May be even a chassis number as well?

You USED to be able to pay a fee and the relevant registration authority would do a rego trail for you but privacy laws stepped in and that stopped.

Then you could ask a friendly police person to do a computer search but again these days privacy laws stepped in and police now have to account for the reason they have made a search so they will be reluctant.

You could try a friendly car insurance friend. They have the same access but not the same restrictions and accountabilty.

I'm not sure about the SA rego website but in NSW and Victoria you can check online to see if your choice of number plates are availible as well , try your old number plate and see if it say's it's in use or not (won't tell you much but it will tell you if the plates were returned after being unregistered or registered in another state ) . Vicroads has a natty little tool on their website at the moment where you can find the car details (engine , chassis number and rego expiry but no personal details) from the number plate , that's handy to find if an old car is still alive and with it's original plate

I think you will find they are all bound by privacy laws now Mike. I work for a finance company and have access to do REVs searches but cannot give out any information to anyone (otherwise I would do it for you 1976miniss :()

hehehehe no. Not much good anyway, I can only see details if it is encumbered under finance through REVs so not helpful in this instance

The girl at Vicroads was able to tell me my original number plate is up for reissue and can be supplied under the personalised number option. She said she was unable to tell me any details of the cars history but could see when I owned it. - Frustrating knowing the information is there and they won't release it  She wouldn't even tell me what happened to it or when.

You can apply through the freedom of information act... I did for my GT to try and obtain a copy of original rego.. earliest they could find was 84 though. But you can do so

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/foi/index.html

Thats how you do it in NSW, also searched victoria as well (cost mea nother $30 though) so i assume sa would be the same. just search the roalds and traffic site for it or info about it
