Hopefully I will get my '65 Deluxe registered in the next month or so. Trying to make the process as simple as I can so any ideas and help would be appreciated.

My car came from Albury/Wodonga and did not have plates on it when I got it. So not known if previously registered in NSW or Victoria. Did a revs check on the engine number but nothing bad came up. I have a receipt from the guy I bought it from in Howlong (near Albury) so I am hoping that with a blue slip and receipt I should be OK? I remembered when I put the '68 Monaro back on the road the RTA could trace the engine number back to my license number so all was OK.

The car has been completely restored, no modification or roll gages or race seats or harnesses. Only thing different will be retractable seat belts in the front. I have a local blue slip place that is mini friendly (owner drives a Moke).

Any other problems to look out for?

Regards and thanks.

sounds about right...

if the blue slipper is mini/moke friendly and there are no problems with the car, then a receipt of purchase should be good enough for a blue slip, i was in the same boat with my moke, though it came from tweed heads so wasnt sure if it was rego'd in NSW or QLD... all good now (minus its tantrums it sometimes has :P)

Also just wanted to check if retractable belts are allowed (legal)in a 1965 mini that only had the static ones when new.

Found this from DOC:

I tried to put some (Clubbie) ones there in our `67 pretend S, but it has early lowback Clubbie seats and the backrest hinges fouled the reels. Check that before you buy...

I have clubman seats and I think now that the reel may foul on the seat base. Is there a part number for the static belts (in red :D )?

The registration process sounds about right - you only need proof of ownership (ie a receipt and a blue slip).

The retractable seat belts are a problem in a deluxe though. The blue slip inspector may or may not pick up on it but it is a safety issue.

Clubmans had a reinforced B pillar that was engineered to take the extra loads that retractable seat belts impose in an accident. Because of the extra loop (a pulley in effect) in the belt system it increases the loads on the pillar in the same way a block and tackle allows you to lift an engine easily.

It is entirely possible that in a moderate to severe accident you could pull the B pillar away from the roof or pull the roof down on top of you.

There have been a number of posts on this subject in Ausmini on this subject.

Dave make sure that when you go to the RTA you have a receipt that shows BODY NUMBER ENGINE NUMBER from the person you bought it from (VERY INPORTANT) that corresponds with the numbers on the blue slip also make sure your blue slipper puts the year of manufactor on the blue slip, been there done that back and forfe back and forfe ALL THE INFORMATION YOU CAN SUPPLY ( no conflicting numbers ) eg number on bulk head or number on radiator shroud . which one is the body number , your modern blue slipper person does not know (SORRY IF I OFFEND ANY BLUE SLIPPERS OUT THERE ) THE ONE ON YOUR RECEIPT Hope this helps CHEERS

These days, I've found that blue slippers tend to go for the number on the radiator shroud (which IS the one to use for a Mini-K, Mk2 S and Clubbies).
But for earlier cars with the BMC ID plate on the firewall, that number (or the same number stamped into the firewall) is the right one to use. NOT the rad shroud number... :x

Appreciate all the replies. One problem I do see is being able to read the engine number. It is written on the receipt for the car and is the same engine - but know reconditioned. Because the blocked was decked by the guru some of the numbers have gone while others remain. The number is 9YA/Ta/H3*** however all you can see is YA/Ta/H3** so really you can't see the "9" or the last number.

I thought about getting the missing numbers and stamping them back in but thought that might make it look dodgey. I do have clear photos of the engine number before reconditioning.

Do I try and restamp or just wait and see?

Thanks Mike for the tip about the seat belts. Might just stay with the normal type and forget about the retractables

Regards

have you stripped the paint back on the number dave.?
even if it isn't visible. the inspector should be smart enough to know that the motor was reco'd and will be fine with it.
had a similar issue with my 1st mini and the inspector was fine.

Personally, I would not re-stamp the engine number until asked, but arm yourself with the pre-photos and story as to why it now looks different.

A photocopy of the relevant page out of a reference book like the mini king catalogue where all the engine number types and body numbers are printed could also help.

Also make sure the receipt has "Paid in Full" or similar on it.

Hi Dave,

Speak to your Blue Slipping person first. The RTA will not even look at your block unless the Blue Slip place tells them to check the identifiers. If the Blue Slip person is happy with the block and the reasons for it, he will note the correct engine number on the blue slip papers and that is all the RTA will look at. If they are unsure with your engine number you will be sent to an RTA Vehicle ID unit who will take a closer look at the engine. If they tell you to restamp it then do it.

At the end of the day nothing will probably come of it and you will get past it all with no worries.

Cheers,
Scott

I hope there is a story behind that and a humerous one.

Unlicenced drivers and unregistered cars have become a problem in our area and the liabilities they face in terms of compensation in an accident are enormous.
