I had some spare time today so went out to the shed and made this...

out of a couple of std mini air cleaners and a oxy set.

These early air cleaners were fitted to 1959 minis (untill August 59) untill they were replaced with the re designed air cleaner with the air intake tube down next to the exhaust. BMC did this to try and cure carburettor icing problems. A genuine early type air cleaner is a very rare item now.
I havent finished it yet, i will beed blast it and paint it black and fit a new yellow "coopers" decal. it should look good when its done. Im going to use it along with a straight "wand" gear leaver on my 850 van just for the nostalgia. :D

Hmmm, you should have let me know as I have just sent spare a 59 LH inlet and a very hard to find RH inlet air cleaners to England along with some 59 distributers to the 59 heritage group.
I know you are after a cardboard type speedo housing , so what other parts are you looking for. I might have them or know where I can get them.
Funny but we never were supposed to have 59 cars here but a lot of stuff turns up

The early type air cleaner was fitted to South Africa built minis up untill 1967! i didnt know that untill now (thanks to Andrew)

David, i did find a cardboard speedo housing so all im after now is a std bore early 850 block (with the 850 cast into the centre) and a one piece radiator cowl, most of the other bits i have. I would mind a couple of early door pull cables too. Thanks

The only 850 engines I have both have the 850 cast in the block towards the rear. The 8AM engine serial number is some 10,000 earlier than the engine number on my 11/60 car. The other engine block is cast differently and is stamped 8Y
Have got a pic of the one you are after as I have some engines to pick-up [when time permits] They are all 850's so there may be something in that lot.
