Tricky you keep adding little bits and pieces of excitement to this project. Kudos to you, it just keeps getting better and better. I for one don't care how long it takes you as I know that the end product will be something that was worth the wait.

Cheers,

Dicko.

Thanks Dicko, remind me to buy you a beer at the Muster.

Anyway, had a frustrating weekend on the car, whereby I spent a lot of hours on the car but just didnt seem to get a lot done.

Cam came around today and tacked the intercooler pipes together, so he could take the back to the workshop and fully weld them up there. The water tank for the windscreen washer came back, but has to be modified a bit to take the pump (sorry Cam!)

The brackets for the oil cooler were completed, and I will test fit it through the week. It should be spot on because we test fit it in situ.

I spent most of the day screwing around with the doors, and the door locks and locking mechanisms. Its not a s easy as it sounds, as I have to mate the Mini stuff, with the new Civic external handle, and the Mini internal handle with the new door card - lovely! I gotta tell you, I was really frustrated today!! I had to rebuld the lock, with Dan's (badassmini) help, and I still didnt get it finished.

Anyway, what I did get finished wss the electric windows, and here is some pics. In the end, really, really easy!

This is the winding mechanism and motor drive installed. Some cutting was required.

With the door card on:

The winding machanism was almost flush with the door card, but not quite.

So, a small cap, which is suuplied with the kit, is used to hide the winder shaft' This will be painted the same colour as the door card so it will blend in.

Will post more tomorrow guys, tired, off to bed.

Ciao,
Tricky

Does the window go all the way to the bottom, or is it like a ford fiesta: just a little bit down? Looks like the motor is in the way of the glass, and I'm guessing the window would be 80mm or so from the bottom?

Hi Harley,

No, the motor dos not foul the glass at all.

I laid the glass on top of the door, and drew the outline of the glass on the door so I would get an idea of where it was frre and where it would interfere. You can still see the black felt pen marks on the door, where the outline is.

It took me as long to work out where the motor unit would go, as it did to actually install the whole mechanism.

Thanks again to Dan and Cameron for thier help yesterday too. You guys are great!

Cheers,
Tricky

Tricky, Don't suppose you can measure the diameter of the motor and the width of the gearbox on that setup for me?
:D

Harley,

Yes I can mate, no worries there.

Dan,

Really nice to catch up with you again. Dont worry about the doors, my problem, and I'll sort it! Thanks for Sunday.

Cheers,
Tricky

Tricky, looking good there on the windows mate.

You'll have people lining up for power windows conversions as well now.
How grunty are those motors? I've looked at them in the past but they don't seem a 'proper' conversion if you know what I mean. I guess I am thinking of all the old cars I've had with really stiff windows, if I'd rebuilt them properly they'd probably not need much power anyway.

Would love to see a video of them in action once you've got them going.
Cheers and keep up the good work.

Madmorrie

MM,
They seem pretty gutsy to me.
Their is a big reduction gearbox on the motor end, like about 20:1 so they should be able to power quite big bits of glass. Remember too we have the added assistance of the col-spring when winding back up.

Harley,
The kits are from a company called SPAL, and they are made in Italy. The quality seems very good. I bought mine from QLD Diesel Spares, as I have an account there, however, AudioXtra are the distributors, so they should be able to tell you where your nearest retail stockist is.

Cheers,
Tricky

theres a few kits on ebay, selling for about $150ish plus postage, think ill be getting one.

tricky is there any way to install them so that there there isnt need to cut anything out? havent put any thought into it but i would assume there could be a recess where the motor could be mounted without cutting and without being in the way of the winder mechanism?

If a motor is welded directly to the regulator then it's possible to do the conversion without cutting of the doors. There were photos recently in another thread.

Most of us get a Starlet front cut which is only the dash forward, so no doors or windows to play with :(
