i've never had probs with icing before.

You need to do long drives on foggy mornings or just normal drives in very cold temps.
If you hold a constant throttle for a while (like on freeway driving) sometimes the throttle spindle will freeze to the carb body.
Other times the moisture in the cold air will just freeze inside the carby.
It is quite a sight to lift the bonnet and see an SU that looks like it has been powdercoated white.

Does the heated manifold stop this problem?

In England and Europe , the grill muff is used in conjunction with a water heated manifold, remember the engine has to get warm for a heated manifold to work

No, it does not stop it, but it will help.
In really cold climates they fitted electric heaters to the carbies.

I only have the problem with ice a couple of times a year. Last year was a good year but this year I have been getting a bit of cutting out.
I only drive about five minutes to work, if I was driving further like to Canberra every day I would be in big trouble!

Looks great :D very neat, well thought out... Only thing I wonder about is that it's needed on a car up here. I mean, it'll be low single digits again tonight, but beautiful low 20's tomorrow, and it warms up quickly... 8)

There is a fan dragging a lot of air out of the inner guard. And there is a big hole under the engine (as well as the three big holes under the bumper) There is plenty of air still getting into the engine bay.

I doubt that the muff makes much difference to hot or cold running. :)

Many years ago i was driving home from somewhere very early in the morning during the winter. I come off the highway and backed off but the twin carburettors had other ideas as they were frozen allmost on full throttle. I turned the key off and slowed down & when i opened the bonnet both the carburettors & ram tubes were covered with ice. I replaced the ram tubes with a proper twin air box and never had the trouble again. I did slightly panic for a split second tho!

The trick is not to use full throttle! When the throttles stick you push the foot down to break the ice and it returns to normal for a while.

I used to get the twins freezing with the stock Cooper S airbox.

this is why the standard single SU air cleaner has a "summer" and "winter" position. You simply rotate it in winter so the intake is dragging air accross the exhaust manifold. That little bit of heat helps at low revs at least

The twin airbox also has this feature, the snorkel extends out to bring the air inlet pipe closer to the extractors. Unfortunally most twin airboxs have had the snorkel cut off at some point to make it easier to fit the box back on.

I'd pay to see BIAM wire one of those up.

Mine has the bell mouthed extension still. The lid of the air cleaner gets really warm (hot almost), something I never noticed without the extension. It obviously really makes a difference in the intake temperature.
