Mick , since you've just taken stuff up there , have you got any ideas on how much (very rough estimate) it would cost to get this down here ? Considering it would most likely be unable to be registered it would be a different set of import duties rules wouldn't it (than a road car to be complianced etc) ???? Anyone else got any ideas ?
OK - some disclaimers
1) there are more empty containers going out of Australia than full ones (we are a net importer of manufactured goods) so the price in one direction is not the same as the other direction.
2) The company paid for 20ft container to get our furniture over here, I paid the difference for a 40ft, plus some extra packaging work (putting a ply bulkhead between furniture and car) plus the insurance for the car
3) paying in AUD at that end will always be cheaper than in EUR at this end. figure on what it costs in AUD to be the same number but with a EUR symbol in front - depending on the exchange rate it will be roughly double in AUD.
4) The shipping agent wants to keep good relations with a major multinational company, so the deal is pretty good
I paid $1700 for the shipping and insurance from Sydney to Almelo (NL).
I have been looking at the import stuff duties wise, and as far as that is concerned, if I import a car that I have owned for more than 12 months there is not much to pay, can't remember the exact rules. Otherwise, if I import it as my "household goods" and won't register it, then duties do not apply. As far as parts are concerned you can do this, but a whole car might be a bit different - solution is to split it into component parts before shipping. Customs take a dim view if they see you selling the parts or cars (rule of thumb is no sale less than 12 months - otherwise they treat you as a dealer). Boat duties might be a different option again.
I have also heard a number of $5k previously for a 40ft container shipping from Sydney to Rotterdam, but I don't know if that was including insurance on the cars or not. Insurance can be the killer.
As far as rego goes, send some pics to a registered engineer and see what they think about it being a SPV. Also consider conditional registration through a historic vehicle club.
