Get a small mirror, lean over the carby and lift the piston all the way to the top. Get one of your brothers to press the accelerator down to the floor and check that the butterfly is actually opening - that is that the accelerator cable is adjusted properly.

Then check the the jet underneath the carby freely rises and falls when the choke is pulled out and pushed back in.
Push the choke all the way in and make sure the jet has risen to the top.

Then - give the idle screw a full turn down to open the butterfly a bit more. Without an air filter on give it a squirt of aerostart or start ya bastard stuff and try and start it.

If it doesn't at least you have eliminated the carby and can go back tot he timing or other issues.

ok well i went to start it again today and still wasnt starting so i loosened the dizzy and turned it clock wise and then is started firing and it started but you would lift the accelerator full on and it wouldnt affect it at all. so then im guessing it must be the timing but i cant seem to work it out becasue i get it on top dead centre (rough estimate) and turn the dizzy until it sparks and then tighten and then it wont even start....i dont understand.

explain this in abit more detail carter... your problem may have something to do with the dizzy or the way it is set up...

well to get it started i static time it. which is i take out no 1 spark plug screw driver down hole and get it close to tdc then mirror on flywheel with torch and get the arrow pointing to 1/4 and then loosen dizzy turn until it just sparks and tighten it up and it doesnt seem to want to start. but today i loosened the dizzy turned it anti clockwise and it started firing and eventually started but wont revv even with accelerator all the way up.which tells me it must be something with timing.

Forget the static timing, just turn the dizzy till it runs clean. You will find a point when it will run good and if you keep twisting it will run worse, just find a "happy" spot where it will rev up Ok.
Then work your timing out with a timing light (or a good ear, or a vacuum gauge, or a dyno)

i dont get a strong smell of fuel when i keep on turning it over which means it may not be getting enough fuel? just a thought? how do i fix that?

Just wondering again about manifold gasket air leak. Have you had the inlet man./extractors off since you last had it running? I had this problem once & it turned out to be the inlet manifold which was not seated properly.

So you turn your dissy way off the timing marks and you get it to fire and wont rev well or if at all but when you try to put the timing close to where it should be you say it dies?

Basically you have a weak spark, it looks good and works ok when there is no real compression in the cylinder (basically it is firing the air/fuel mix between TDC and BDC. When you do rev it, it miss fires almost straight away) and looks good outside of the car so you can see that it has spark but when its put under load it is being blown out or just isnt strong enough to ignite the airfuel mix.

What type of coil is it?

Fit a new coil, set your timing back to where it should be and happy days will return.
