The book has a chart at the back specific to leyland 998cc but this chart doesnt refer to a diff ratio, it says then to refer to the data at the front of the book and as in the chart posted here lists 3.765, which i guess is better for highway running than a 3.44 No oppisite way round 3.765 is quicker off the mark thou but the 3.44 is better at transferring torque for up hill and highway use. Then this chart refers to specific leyland ratios for A+ series boxes, and the 998 isnt an A+ block.

im perplexed now, and dont really know what is in the box currently.


We use a 3.44 in our 1100+60 GR RE13 Cam and nice shaved 202 head. Good on the highway but want a bit more off them mark so my next 998 motor will get a 3.765

A good way to identify what final drive you have is to see what the part no. is on the crownwheel (the bigger gear). For instance if it has 22A411 it is 3.44/1. 64 Cooper has kindly supplied all the part no's earlier in the thread.

it is easier to recognise what it is by look in the crown wheel for the tooth numbers ie 18/62, 18 teeth on the pinion gear and 62 teeth on the crown wheel, these numbers matter as both gears need to be matched.

As pointed out earlier in the thread, you can work out the ratio from these numbers as well, 62/18 = 3.44......
