Hi all, just a question, i have my A+ dizzy pulled apart and how does the mechanical advance work? The top and bottom shaft are fixed together. It has the springs and weights. The top of the advance mechanism locks in to the base of the top part of the body where the moduel bolts on. Am i just looking at it wrong??

Sounds like it might be sized together. The 'Top' shaft hase the 4 lobe cam on it to open & close the points. It's quite short, about 50 mm or so. The 'Bottom' shaft is almost the length of the distributor. The 'Top' shaft actually mounts over ther top of the 'Bottom' shaft.

air through the tube being sucked from the carby, causes a vaccum on the vaccum module pulling the diaphram out, this in turn pulls the spring out.

the spring is attached to the section at the top of the dizzy where your points are. This section is a two part section allowing the top part, to turn whilst the bottom part is locked in by the three screws. This "advances" the points slightly. I have seen these two plates welded together so that the vaccum module can be removed altogether.

as already stated, the top shaft, either bolted in, or capped with a plastic cap is locked to the bottom shaft.

Im not sure exactly what the weights and springs do. You will also see a number on these 10, 11, 13, cant remember their meaning. Someone will add to this i guess.

True enough I think he really means the centrifugal advance though.. but does that even exist on an A+ dizzy?

The A+ started in 1980 so there would have been a heck of a lot of them with mechanical (centrifugal) advance.
My 1984 Montego has an A+ with electronic dizzy with mechanical (centrifugal) advance.

hey guys, thanks for your thorght and input. I fitted some lighter springs to the weights, refitted dizzy to car, put timing light on and it advances up!!
