Guys I wanted to tun my new engine over using the starter so that I can get back to TDC. I wacked the starter on and used a pair of jumper leads. Black to negative on battery and earth on engine. The red on the postitive and the other end to where the lead from the solaniod (sp) lead would attach to the starter.
The starter just spun and didn't engaged the engine, yes the flywheel is on. :)
Ideas?

If the bendix is jammed or at least stiff on it's helical shaft, it won't scroll back and engage the flywheel ring gear as you apply power to the starter motor. Check to see it moves easily on its shaft back and forth and lubricate with graphite powder (or the smallest amount of light oil) till it does. They can be sourced new I believe.

also check to see that the battery is fully charged and you are getting great contact with the starter motor. If not enough current is available from the starter leads, then starter motor will not accelerate fast enough to scroll the gear back into the flywheel ring gear. it relies on the smooth movement of the bendix on it's shaft as well as brute aceleration to engage correctly.
