A good place would be in the rear trailing arm hub. Put the pickup magnet on the hub, and mount the sensor to the backplate of the drum assembly.
Its relateively protected in there, provided the dust doesnt kill it.

that's the way I'd do it too, you can also get better resolution by picking up the backs of the wheel studs - 4 pulses per revolution instead of 1

Is there anyway that the code could be modified so the distance covered can be adjusted?

Adjsutable trip meters are pretty handy for Touring assemblies when you get lost and have to back track :)

Thanks y'all for the positive response.

When you built it yourself, anything is possible! (that doesn't sound too hard either)

That pic of the rear hub is interesting. Hmm... I might buy a cheap bike computer and try and adapt the magnetic sensor on that.

Here's some circuit diagrams for the system I've built. Not everything is explained in the diagrams (for example the Tellymate is completely missing).

I'm entertaining the idea of getting some circuit boards made, and putting together a kit. I've already built the prototype  . The main problem with this is that people would probably need to customise the code and program it themselves. Also, if I had to build it again, I would roll the two circuits into one.

Annnyway, I hope the diagrams are useful to someone.

I would be very interested in a kit. I can solder, wire up a car, and I can program. But I've really understood electronics (which components to select, how to design a circuit etc).

Cheers,
