Whilst doing a google images search for something I came up with this guy's flikka page with some photo's from the 1970's .

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hugo90/

This one is claimed to be taken in Melbourne in 1974

Image

and someone's comment
Quote:
Disappeared when the dealer disappeared. Used to sit atop the "Mini World" sign in High Street, Thornbury in the late '70's - early '80's. Was red by that point. Note the rego label on the side window - it was a street-legal driver.

Secondly , this is claimed to be from the 1976 Castrol International Rallye in Canberra , pretty impressive pipe work at the front to extend the nose and protect the winch/driving lights .

Anybody know anything about either car ?

That's a Geelong car. As far as I know it was built down here, too.

I remember a yellow shorty like the first one at a servo in Launceston when I was a kid (so early '70s).

I knew a guy that had a shorty Cooper S in Hobart in the mid '80s. It got t-boned at an intersection and broke in half. The ambulance driver thought the owner was in pain, but he was crying because he'd killed his car.

I remember that car as kid. It used to go down Tramway Pde Beaumaris all the time. I think one of the guys kids went to the same primary school as me. My dad used to point it out to me - that and a stretched 6 wheel Moke.

The 70s would be right - 1975 ish

I know where there is a shorty mini just like that but red with pink pearl. Can remember it from about 10 years ago driving around and have seen a couple of times since then. I know the owner is now thinking of selling it but is away on holiday at the moment. I have his contact details and will be ringing him soon so I'll see if it is similar or even the same one as in the photo. Not sure how much he'll want for it but am considering buying it for a bit of fun :D if not too dear.
Either way I'll take some photos of it if I go for a look.
Phil

Allen's Motors (The Morris Minor Centre) in Parramatta has one. It has a towbar on both ends, is used for shunting dead Morries, Austin Lancers etc about the workshop & yard.

I remember as a kid at the Royal Show seeing a show before the holden stunt drivers....

clowns (the type with red noses, big shoes and face paint) in shortened minis, with large external circular roll cages. they would drive, hit the skids which were biased to the front creating a massive endo but due to the roll cage the car would somersault over onto it's wheels again. pretty easy in a shorty i would imagine.
