Would that be on a 5 speed box or on an elder 7 port head?

AAaaiiieeeeeeeeee

If I had a spare $7000, I know where I'd be spending it.

If you find $14,000, let me know

Just wanted to chime in here: are you wanting a 5spd because of the freeway? or because of the close ratios? You may want to research the drive ratios for each gear in those boxes and compare them to 4spd because some of them are purely made for racing and have gear ratios spread over the same or similar to a 4spd box (ie, same ratios but spread over 5 instead of 4 gears). From memory the 5th gear in some of them is 1:1 just like a 4spd.. you might want to check that out.

If the need is for a taller top gear then maybe a change in diff ratio is what you want and it probably 5 or 6 times more economical than a 5spd box. Perhaps the answer is a change in both??

All I know is when I was looking into these years ago for my build, I was content with a 4spd cooper S ratio box. Admitedly I don't do any sort of freeway miles to comment but I hardly ever find the need to go into 5th on the freeway, it has something to do with how much power your donk makes. in 4th, Lillee eats up the revs and wants to go well out to 5000rpm no problems, at which (on a 3.44 diff) you'll be breaking the law  (4400 is 110km/h).

All I am saying is have a dig around before you go and blow perfectly good Sic Bo money on a gearbox that doesn't solve your problem

Picking nits here, but 110km/h on a 3.647 diff is 4380rpm, a 3.444 diff gives 4140rpm.

[edit] I put this spreadsheet together to calculate RPM/road speeds :)

And they come with a disclaimer- no more than 90lb/ft torque or you will munch it.
No good to me then...

I was thinking recently that when I finally get that lotto ticket. I'd get the KAD 5 speed 'box which has a 1:1 5th gear, but use a 2.76:1 final drive. So I did have the a bit lower top gear revs but an extra gear to shift through on the way up.

Currently, i'm always reaching for 5th in my red mini. Buckets of mid-range torque means 3000rpm shifts are the norm, even feels that way at 80kph in 4th. It could be very easy to break the law in 80 to 100kph overtakes (I live out of town and do mostly 100kph driving) so maybe just a longer diff?

Having said all that, my current Mini project has a 5 speed 'box and more power anyways, maybe just finish that...

yeah, but your 1st gear ratio stays the same, so the diff makes it slow off the line

Yeah you know what I meant... anyway weak top gear, slow bottom gear if changed diff ratio, all these need to be considered before putting money down
