They are designed to melt snow and ice. They are not really neded in Australia. (I drive regularly in minus temps in Goulburn)

When I was in England a few years back I rented a Ford Focus. I found that you could stall the engine by turning on both the front and rear heated screens at the same time.
I also found that it was almost dangerous to drive with the heated screen on. It hurt my eyes to look through when it was on for a bit.

I've just purchasd two of these for the Moke.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170372047536&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

They are very compact and not much more than a PC fan. Problem solved. :)

I had one of those behind my woodgrain dash in the 850 so the air came out through the demister slot. How heavy is your wiring? If their claims are correct, two of those on full heat means 320 watts, at 12 volts that's over 26 amps!  That's loom melting territory!

Then again if you wire them so that the heater elements aren't used, i'm guessing the fan motors would draw bugger all current.

I'd just bolt a pair of clubby plastic ones in there. They fit.

What about a period demister?

It attaches to the front screen with suction cups and looks like a single bar heater. Popular in the 60's. I've got one here somewhere

No.
The first Australian Mini to come standard with a heater apart from the Cooper S was the Matic. The second one was the Clubman.
